I just got one of these for mine:-
"Leather" desire pouch

It fits in there nice and snug with a little tab at the top to pull it out.

Edit: its obviously for the N1 phone but the pictures show it on an actual esire so it seems to fit ok

Just noticed the eBay link! ordering 2, one for my Magic and one for the Desire when I get one!

The leathery one that comes with the magic wears out after a few months, thankfully all that wear and tear went on the case and not the phone - cases are excellent

Just found FlexiShield Skin For The HTC Desire

and HTC Desire Desktop Charging Cradle (HD2 being shown but works the same for Desire)

Same one in the link I put. Its actually a Nexus One cover (says Nexus One on the red bit from the back) but it fits the Desire.

Also missing a cut out for the power and volume buttons. It fits but i'd rather wait for the real deal.

True but by all accounts the case is actually quite flexible so the buttons can still be pressed easily.

A flexible case is actually better than a solid case for protection.

Got two of those when I had the Nexus One. They fit the Desire perfectly, although moulding variations in the skin mean the headphone and mic cutouts aren't exact fits sometimes, which is exactly the same on the Nexus.

The skin actually has moulded recesses inside for where the power and volume buttons are too, so no worries there.

Makes me wonder if the Nexus One and the HTC Desire are the same phones with a few differences here and there. Oh, wait a minute....

Just waiting for screen protectors to turn up now. Ordered a couple of sets from dcmugen88, but it turns out they were the wrong size so he's canned the order and will notify and send again once the correct ones are available.

Good news, I've been using htis type of skin for my Hero, with a large screen protector, and they seem to work very well, no scratches or dings, and no need to keep getting in/out of a case, and if I do drop it by accident when out of a case, it survives in-tact!..

Just about to order the Desire this week, so will get one of those as well!

amazon also has one in brown , very tempting
