HTC Vive to cost $799?

UK order page still showing April, but some places are now showing May, so maybe they've pre-allocated stock to countries already. So fingers crossed we should be in the first(ish) batch :).

Someone on the Vive subreddit contacted HTC Support who confirmed any orders today would be in the first batch.

I think motion controllers will be essential to a proper VR experience, if you are just wanting to experience a flightsim or racing game in VR sure your existing hotas or wheel will work but that is carrying over a typical experience into VR and you get the visuals but not as much of the experience.

Some of the most fun things I've seen in VR are things like job sim, budget cuts and even an archery demo, HL2 VR where you could actually aim down the ironsights of the gun + actually throw grenades with a natural throw action + manually swing that crowbar, or hover junkers where they were adding movie swish/reload sounds to the movement of the guns

cockpitted games are going to be fun, but if you have a button on your dashboard.. would you rather press an associated button on your controller, or just reach out and push it with your hand

oculus shipping with a seated solution and no motion controllers imo is only giving you half the experience, dk2 owner here too btw

The only thing I'll say about shipping is from looking at the unboxings of Vive Pre's, there are several large boxes involved with the Vive equipment. Combined with if they are shipping direct from USA, Asia or somewhere else not close to us, then I can sort of understand the costs.

One thing that did slightly concern me that I found out this morning is that Project Cars apparently only supports the Rift, this is one of the games I was planning on playing in VR.

No word that they are going to write support for the Vive headset either. Also browsing the Steam store, it's odd how the VR filters work. There is a general one which shows everything that has VR support, then you can filter further by headset. The Vive-only filtering currently shows the least amount of titles, I'm hoping this will change and we start to see a bit more parity.

This is why I am waiting, no point jumping in the deep end until I know what headset support is like. You would think though if a games on steam then it would support vive?

I hope we don't end up with a fragmented market, but I think initially we will, as game devs will sign exclusivity deals with HTC or Oculus :(

Why would developers be interested in exclusives, it already a niche market so they will want all the sales they can get, both use the same platform so exclusives would be pretty stupid IMO

Developers wouldn't turn down a truck full of Facebook, Valve or Sony money though. It can be the difference between a studio staying afloat and a game getting made, or not.

I'm Ok to a degree with timed exclsuives, but I will be disappointed if a game is obviously being blocked from being supported across other headsets just because some CEO says so.

The biggest example of this kind of thing at the minute is Adr1ft which looks great. Last year the developers openly said they were making it for all 3 main VR platforms. Now after Facebook came knocking they are "focusing solely on Oculus" at this time.

They have added that it is a timed exclusive though, due to the amount of help Oculus provided for the development process. How much of the story either way we can believe it another matter.

Got an official link for that? I was only looking this morning at people saying how hacked off they were, and they weren't going to boycott Oculus purely because of this.

If it's timed, I've no problem.
