HTC Vive to cost $799?

I've no doubt the Vive is the best piece of technology overall, but I'm still not convinced on room-scale for this first generation. IMO the seated experience still needs sorting first.

Yep I agree. I guess it does give them something the competition don't have, but it's early days and I'm not sure it's needed yet.

Personally I think both are a bit expensive if we want VR to take off and not die before it gets going, plus the spec needed to go with it. If VR gains mass market apeal we might be thanking the likes of Sony and Samsung.

VR is only ever going to be a niche product for people that are happy spending their leisure time with a screen strapped to their face.

AR will be the technology that has real mass market appeal. Hololens/Google Glass type devices have much more potential to become mainstream.

AFAIK they use the same OLED 1080x1200 @ 90hz (per eye) screens.

The only difference I believe is that the Oculus is 16:9 and the Vive is 9:5

That`s not where I am coming from. HTC are in a far far better position in the future for screen development in terms of hardware than the Rift will ever be.

Do you understand how many Xbox, Play-stations are in peoples living rooms ?

VR will be massive make no doubt it.

:D

Vive all the way.

All about the screens at the end of the day.

Most people seem to think the Rift is slightly ahead on screen/optics quality?

Will try the SteamVR performance test later, if I get anything other than High/Very High fidelity I'll be cross :p

No matter what the tech, you're still strapping a screen to your face and blocking out the real world. That just doesn't appeal to a lot of people. My other half for instance, tried my DK2 and just went NOPE.

I think VR will be popular for a while...like the Wii was. But AR has much more potential.

so many are just buying into marketing of vr. it isnt ready yet. wont be for many more years yet.

marketing will obviously push it though. regardless.:p

how do you figure?
HTC don't manufacture panels, they buy theirs in - in the last few years they've used panels from Samsung, AUO and Sony

How is that really any different from Oculus who have a very tight relationship with Samsung?
If AUO or Sony came out with a better VR panel I can't see them not allowing Oculus access to it

its at the early adopter stage, there will always be people who will buy the latest shiny thing - just look at $10k 4K screens when they first came out... I'm pretty sure a lot more 4K screens get sold now that they are <$1k
it will be a few more years before it is mass market ready yes

Given that it comes with a fair bit more out of the box compared to the Rift, this was a lot less than I was expecting.

Still unsure about being an early adopter though at these kinda prices, might just sit on the fence and wait until gen 2 comes along (or something really neat makes me want to purchase it sooner).

It can cost that all day long.

Nobody is going to buy it at that price.

I am surprised by the number of people who think this, given that the Rift's £530 price meant there was lots of the similar thinking, but if you try and pre-order today you wont get delivery till July. I expect the same for the Vive.

You ever thought she might actually be the minority?

Almost everyone I know, regardless of age or background, has been impressed when they have tried a VR solution for the first time. My GF was even enjoying the Google Cardboard's default apps, and she hates tech! Same for the reports I read online, it's rare someone takes an instant dislike to it. Usually it's because of motion sickness through either not being set up right, or the user is just extremely intolerant of that sort of thing.
