HTC Vive

It has a proximity sensor within the HMD to detect when you put it on and take it off. This turns the device on or off.
Hmm; so the green LED on the HMD itself never seems to go out and you can feel slight heat on the front of the set which suggests it’s pulling power.

Any ideas what the story is with UK orders now?

Haven't heard anything since the last email a few weeks back. Card had a pending charge then nothing.

Getting a bit miffed now in fairness.

Dim green is standby, brighter when in use. You need to cut power completely for it to be fully off.

I'm the same at the moment and htc haven't really explained what the situation is, the main consensus on the internet is that they are having supply issues, but HTC have said if you have a April supply date you will receive it in April

Not gonna lie...

After not being overly impressed by anything other than the Budget Cuts demo I was starting to feel a bit down about the Vive.

Even DCS World seems like a bit of a pain with the Vive because I haven't played in over 6 months...

Anyway.... today I fished my wheel out of the loft and gave Live For Speed a go.

Oh boy, what a great experience. I spent just over an hour on one server (first one I clicked on) doing the same rallycross race over and over. So much fun.

The fully immersed feeling from having the wheel & headset is fantastic.

Are there any other racing games which support the Vive yet? From my understanding neither Project Cars or Dirt Rally do?

I must be missing something as the headset never seems to go into standby (dim green), even with the PC powered off it still bright green...

I have that with my mouse (and my old keyboard and mobo). USB stay on when PC is off. There should be a BIOS option to turn off USB power with computer power (not currently on my mobo, though).

How is the OLED black smear that plagued the DK2? I know Oculus fixed it by ensuring that the pixels never actually turned off by keeping the blacks 1 step above absolute black.

I've not noticed any black smear myself just the well covered, SDE and lens flare effects.

Not that I know off unless there's other sims that might work via the OpenVR API which is how LFS works.

Gone completely. I've not seen it in any of the experiences I've played and I would have seen it if it was there due to it annoying the hell out of me with the DK2.

Well todays shipments have gone out, but despite being in the right time window for the original order (xx:01 - xx:03), I have not received shipment on my Logmein order :(

Are the screens still on?

To be honest even the green "dim" standby LED is fairly noticeable so it may just be you don't realise it's switching off correctly.

Do the controllers and base stations power off when you exit SteamVR as they get their shutdown command from the HMD. I would imagine the HMD also shows up as a second screen or device in the system or GFX control panel when it's on, so that might be worth checking.

Clearly HTC and Oculus didn't really consider the volume of supply to demand they'd need. How could they release something when they're so unprepared.

To be honest, I'm not surprised it's been like this with regards to stock. With a new product category launch you have two options for your stock;
1) Low-ball it and just deal with long lead times, potential cancellations, and a bit of negative press.
2) High-ball it and run the risk of writing off loads of unsold inventory, potentially destroying the company if the device doesn't take off.

I think if I was HTC and Oculus I would take option 1.

It doesn't excuse the absolutely atrocious communication from both companies though. I think HTC are doing a better job than Oculus at the moment but that's like saying that being stabbed is better than being shot.

With regards to the Vive though, I finally got it set up and working like it should and I played a load of Space Pirate Trainer last night. What a laugh that is. I also played some DCS which was awe inspiring flying around. I don't think I could fly a plane that I didn't know with it though as the resolution just isn't high enough to read the dials and panels well enough.
Also played some more World of Warcraft on Virtual Desktop. That was a whole lot of fun.

There is a limit to how fast things can be produced. No amount of money thrown at that problem will change it short of building their own manufacturing centres.

So their options were:

Wait until there are enough to fulfill all preorders before sending out any, nobody gets one until May/June.

or

Start sending them out when they receive them from manufacturers, people start getting them in April but not everyone.
