HTC Vive

Just stumbled across this, tried watching the vid, but a lot went over my head, but sounds like it does the same thing but is free so might be worth watching as V4.0 is due out this week.

So VorpX has supported DX11 for a while but mostly ends up using Z depth to create pseudo stereoscopic images.

Vireio is using DX API calls to make the game engine create true stereoscopic images which is better but they've just taken longer to get DX11 working because of course it's free and being coded by volunteers.

I still wasn't sure if the Vive is supported at all in the v4.0 this week or he was just hinting that the Vive is being added for a later release with room scale added later again.

anyone know whether you can change where you see the VR image .

for example in audioshield and space trainer the image is where my pc is so i have to have the leads around my side which is a bit of a pain.

ideally i would like to have my back to the pc so the leads are always behind me

Run the room setup again and change the orientation of "forward" after you have drawn your chaperone area?

For me most stuff opens in the direction my SteamVR dashboard was open.

Anyone figured out how to switch the camera mode from Tron to normal view yet?

Think you can only get the fullscreen view as "Tron", the full colour camera appears in the SteamVR dashboard as the little rectangle next to one of your controllers.

I may be wrong though if there's an option somewhere I've missed :o

So, I've been sitting near my front door/window since 8am this morning. Still no sign.
Did I miss the knock?
Can he find my house?
Did I get the right day?
Is it all an elaborate hoax?
I have no fingernails left

Yeah it is getting kinda late. Up til 9pm is it?

My camera doesn't seem to work properly I am not sure what it is, as soon as I activate room mode it seems to fluctuate and lose connectivity with the headset, then it like works for 1 second then white then work then white, and so on, anyone else having this issue? Also how the hell do you get games like Half life 2 to work in VR I've tried loading them up but they seem to go into theatre mode, then I can't do anything..... am i missing something?

My camera hasn't worked since I received my headset so over 3 weeks! I tried absolutely everything I could think of until my X99 motherboard died this morning.

So I was forced to dig out the trusty i5 3570K + Z77X motherboard and get that going again. Lo and behold the camera works perfectly on that system with zero changes other than enabling the damn thing!

Not sure I want the X99 system back now it's gone back via RMA.

Here's a much better video.

I'm sure others out there have made much better stuff that I have, but even at the basic state I really like what the Vive is capable of in terms of importing 3D models into Unity.

I'm looking forward to learning how to texture my objects, or g=making multi-part pieces that can be manipulated together. Plus make the environment more appealing so I can get an even better sense of scale. Perhaps I will replicate my real life desk/room so it really feels like the objects are real!!

As an engineer with solid works as my main cad package and a home DIY 3D printer (K8200) I see that as a great reason to push me to this headset. I only do printing for my hobbies but see what you did as a good excuse to get one. With a new job tomorrow If I fit in im ordering one to use for gaming and test designs. Well done. :)

Ha, if only HTC paid me commission! :P

Well that blows. Just phoned DHL. Due to the bank holiday they never bothered to deliver my headset. Thanks for telling me. Despite having 3 emails and 2 texts saying it'll be delivered Tuesday.
So, another day off work, lets see what happens.

I'd love for this to be effective for product design but I just can't see beyond it being a gimmick. For architectural visualisation and demonstration, absolutely yes. For parts and assemblies, not so much. When AR hits the mainstream I can see that improving the collaborative process, but VR is too restrictive and low res for it to be used for any kind of finesse.

The camera issue will most likely just be USB port compatibility and sometimes software such as the Razer Synapse. In fact just uninstall any software that may be interfacing with a USB device apart from Steam VR of course!

Yes if t's not a native VR title then you have to force the game to run in 3D using VorpX or Vereio Perception (Vive support imminent).

There are also some standalone solutions using various methods such as Minecraft using Python/Java libraries. Minecraft once setup and working is a great example of a how a open environment can work.

Why apply the limitations of the technology of today to shoot down an idea for tomorrow?

It would be very depressing if everyone had this mindset, and nobody at least tried to figure out how tools could be made to enable creation of models rather than just visualisation.

"You can't move past your walls in VR, locomotion is impossible, until we develop force fields and antigravity it just won't work" wasn't what people said. Instead they are using teleportation now, and who knows what is next.

Maybe for now, we restrict model creation to 'basic' shapes because of the resolution. Like Tilt-Brush, many tools are at your disposal. For fine control, you select a plane and then use the touch pad to incrementally scroll co-ordinates. maybe new intelligent snapping algorithms based on head view position etc.

Who knows, this all may end up to be a terrible idea. But as a community people should at least try first.
