HTC Vive

Had my shipping email today. Then I had a txt message a few hours later saying it was due for delivery tomorrow. I thought it would take longer considering it was coming from the Czech Republic. Hope that isn't the case because I'm getting my wife to sit in all day to sign for it. She will be angry at me if it doesn't turn up.

Less than 24 hrs in my case though only 1 hour less :)

Well, that's great to hear. Perfect timing as well seeing as it's the weekend too. Just bought Hover Junkers, The Blu and Holopoint and downloading everything that is free. Need to get Audio Shield and Space Pirate Trainer next.

Any other recommendations?

I can fully recommend ZOMBIE TRAINING SIMULATOR. don't be put off by the video, it doesn't do it justice, its awesome. I even got my mum to play it and shes nearly 70!

also worth a look is FINAL APPROACH & VANISHING REALMS (although I'm stuck on that one)

HOLOPOINT is quite fun for 10 minutes at a time

I'm on my third night with the Vive and it's pretty amazing I have to say. It only took less than a minute in The Lab to realise I hadn't just read a load of hype these past few months. So many great ideas, hope to see more of that kind of thing from Valve.

I still need to get the IPD set correctly and adjust the headset right as I'm getting crazy red marks over my face. No motion sickness but have had a weird sleepiness sensation since getting it.

When you close down SteamVR, does the light on the left side of the HMD stay green or turn red?

What should it do?

I ask because mine stays green and after returning to it, it's a little warm...as in it's still powered.

EDIT: dimmed green is standby, bright green is on. Just found out.

I redid mine...loosened all the straps, pulled the back of the headstrap in to positions and tightened from there. Seems much better.

This. I found really loosening the top strap and having it right round the back of my head really helped. Also having the IPD smaller than I thought made things clearer.

The winners in my house have been Job Simulator, Zombie Training, The Lab and Vanishing Realms.

Need more experiences though, darn if this thing isn't addictive...

Holoball is cheap and good fun too

I've played this the most but only 10-20 mins at a time.

I feel my 2.5 m x 2 m play area is a mixed blessing. I don't have to move far to play the next shot but then I'm not really working up a sweat either.

I find Space Pirates hard as I don't have much room to dodge.

Good guide for fitting the vive: http://rainfold.com/blog/how-to-fit-htc-vive.html

Yep, have done this already. It's fine until I look down which is when it starts to go blurry unless I hold the hmd down a little. It is so much better with the back section at the back of your head rather than top I agree.

Has anyone tried decent underground? While eilte is being fixed, I was thinking I could get my space combat kicks from this

Why apply the limitations of the technology of today to shoot down an idea for tomorrow?

It would be very depressing if everyone had this mindset, and nobody at least tried to figure out how tools could be made to enable creation of models rather than just visualisation.

"You can't move past your walls in VR, locomotion is impossible, until we develop force fields and antigravity it just won't work" wasn't what people said. Instead they are using teleportation now, and who knows what is next.

Maybe for now, we restrict model creation to 'basic' shapes because of the resolution. Like Tilt-Brush, many tools are at your disposal. For fine control, you select a plane and then use the touch pad to incrementally scroll co-ordinates. maybe new intelligent snapping algorithms based on head view position etc.

Who knows, this all may end up to be a terrible idea. But as a community people should at least try first.
I can't comment on the other players, but Autodesk aren't interested in it from a product design perspective and this shows through their lack of development of exporters for Inventor. Revit and AutoCAD architecture on the other hand have avenues. That being said, Autodesk are not known for their early adoption, and prefer to buy companies after they're established.
If you are convinced that it would be a worthwhile investment, do the work show the proof and you will be able to sell it on very easily.

I gotta say though, as soon as I heard about the onset of VR I was furiously thinking of how it could apply to our industry, product design, but as much as I thought about it I couldn't find a strong enough case for it adding value beyond the cool factor. Yes it would be great to go inside a machine and work on the inner electrics or bolting mechanisms, etc, but those kinds of needs are not part of the daily grind and don't apply to everyone.
I've since spoken to many designers and many engineering clients on the feasibility of VR in their workplaces and the majority are far more closed minded than I.

I don't doubt that VR will be available in every possible business application at some point in the future, but product design isn't high on the list this early on. By the time it is ready to be adopted, AR will be available and make the VR application of it obsolete.

Got shipping notice yesterday so thought it would be about a week. Just arrived! DHL express works!

All is forgiven DHL, well played...

I'm getting really bad judder with mine, but can't tell whether it's an issue with the height of the light houses or my hardware.

Got one attached to a curtain pole and one at desk level. Lights are green on both, but when the headset is on the desk there's noticeable judder.

They need to be at 6' 5" minimum, same height as well surely?....not one below the other.

Curtain pole doesn't sound very stable...there are little motors causing vibration in each unit that need to be held still.

Have you removed the plastic film from each basestation? I forgot and only realised a couple of days later.
