Huge Indycar crash

I don't follow indy car, but I only watched the Senna film for the first time two days ago, so seeing this on twitter and finding more out about it really made me feel awful.

Yet another great racing driver lost :(

RIP Dan Wheldon.

Just updated my blog with a quick post about it, including a video of his famous indy 500 victory which was frankly amazing considering how it happened.

Tragic news.
RIP :(
What car was Wheldons I can't work it out from the videos as I don't follow it so no idea who is who.
If you watch the overhead replay vid, I believe his is the white car that comes into the picture at 21 seconds (behind another white car), he was in 24th place. It looks like he was comletely unsighted, hit at near full speed and the car went flying :(.

RIP Dan Wheldon

Never nice to hear about someone dying in motosport, hopefully that can take the lessons learnt from this and implement designs that stop it happening again.

My Dad rang me up last night to say that there had been a crash, and it didn't look good for Wheldon (don't have a TV at home, and internet at my house wasn't reliable enough last night to stream the race). Awful news. RIP Dan.

Every time I've booked a ticket to go and watch a Formula 1 Grand Prix it always says that gut wrenching message on the ticket - "Warning - Motorsport can be dangerous"...

Still, you never want it to be that dangerous or horrific.

That crash was absolute carnage, dreadful way to go, Rest In Peace Dan and I hope everyone involved in the crash recovers mentally and physically of those who survived. :(

RIP Dan Wheldon.

I don't follow Indycars but like others said, they don't seem as safe as F1 cars? Also recognised quite a few names in the drivers list, didn't think I would.

I think the cars are about as safe but F1 doesn't run 220mph with steel and concrete walls and no run offs. These cars are also very equal which makes for very close racing.

The sad thing is because Wheldon didn't have a full time drive this year he has done all the testing on next years safer chassis.

If you look at the pictures of the car the cockpit was intact but the roll bar was gone, it looks as if he hit the wall upside down and one small bit of metal won't stop that sort of impact.

The only thing you can say is that it's a miracle more people weren't killed or seriously injured.

If F1 cars went to ovals then sennas death wouldnt of been the last we would have seen in F1 and im pretty sure we would see much of the same carnage over the years. 200mph+ and concrete barriers says it all, the cars can take some pretty hard front, side and rear impacts, the top of the car is a different story. As F2KSer mentioned, 15 cars involved, could have been a lot worse.
