Huge Indycar crash

Looked like one nasty crash. Why the flames though when they have crashed, when F1 cars crash very rarely you see flames.

Does Indycar need to look at the designs of their cars ?

Gutted, that's why Indy drivers have far more respect for each other than F1 drivers, far more chance of getting killed. A f1 driver thinks nothing of running another driver off the track.

So many great drivers lost or hurt in Cart/Indycar :(

RIP indeed.

It's the speed and the closeness of the racing that is much more likely to cause accidents at Indy car. They are doing 200mph with 20/30 car side by side - in F1 you don't see that.

Not sure that is fair.

Motorsport will never be 100% safe.

When you have cars going 200mph plus it is inevitable, sadly.

Those sort of speeds and that many cars all bunched up, its bound to happen at some point :(

For sure.

You get complacent though don't you ?

You see the crashes that drivers survive, you don't really have any deaths in big forms of motorspot and you think it won't happen.

And then like you say, the inevitable happens ...

so sad.

I would imagine it was a head injury, I am only guessing though.

from what i can make out on the numerous videos, he went into somebody, which then flipped him up in the air like a hot wheels car and sent him upside down straight into the concrete wall at the top of the bank.

He then ended up at the bottom of the bank with a failed rollover bar so his head would have made direct impact with the race track :(

The 10th driver to die in Cart or IRL since the loss of senna in F1. :(

Just looking, can't believe it's almost 12 years since Greg Moore died.

Was watching live on Sky. Felt sick to the pit of my stomach.

We are so used to watching motorsport guys get out and walk away. This looked bad instantly.

RIP Dan. :(

Shocking stuff, just got back home and had recorded the race on Sky+ saw there was a 3 page thread on here and knew that wasnt normal....not sure I'm gonna watch it now:(

Even worse really is that Wheldon was only reallyracing due to a competition indycar were running on the final race where a driver and member of the public could win $2.5 million each should Wheldon have won :(

He won the Indy 500 this year as well, unbelievable he's now gone...

RIP Dan Wheldon
