Didn't the FIA come out with a statement some time during a recent season that if the car behind has its front wing alongside your rear tyre, you had to leave space? In which case, here things become a little more complicated as whilst Grosjean went off-track to complete the move, Massa didn't leave space for the car alongside. Given that in similar situations we've seen drivers allowed to keep the position (Rosberg running people wide at Bahrain the other year, for example), it does seem a little harsh in this case.

Yeah it doesn't stop people on here peddling out but he was on the racing line. They seem to think that is an excuse from the rule.

They have been pretty lenient with that rule. They all pretty much do it at one time or another.

Well it can't be a true hole, otherwise Mercedes are now bending the rules of physics. ;)

It can only be a double-wall rim (or a wall with a recess, but still closed). The fact that it's on the inside of the wheel rather than the outside suggests it doesn't have much to do with aerodynamics and more about managing tyre or brake temperature.
 
I suppose it would be feasable to channel high speed cool air into the inside of the wheel, which would fill that recess and create a cool (relatively) area of metal inside the tyre, that could in theory reduce the tyre temps.
 
I used google to translate an article about it and it translated as "double crust", and now i cant stop thinking about pizza lol. They should deffo be called double crust rims though.
