Hurricane - Irma

would love to go and see it first hand, doubt anyone would sell me a ticket to get there now though :-(

wunderground's showing 220kph winds for the Turks, possible 20' swells etc, sounds like there's a lot more to come before it all calms down again.

Rather you than me wolfie, I've been in Florida for two hurricanes, one just blew empty trash cans all over the street, the other, around 2009, lifted a large chunk off the roof of a bar maybe 600 metres up the street, in Cape Coral.
It still opened next day, although the parking lot was like a paddling pool, but I don't think I'd fancy this Irma.
If you REALLY want to try it, fly Delta to Atlanta, then take an Amtrak train from Peachtree Station, Atlanta, to Tampa FL.. or to Miami FL.
Good Luck.

Looks like after Irma has passed through Jose could do a loop in the atlantic and return to hit Bahamas and Florida again

I don't know much about these models, but does this not show Irma increasing in strength / maintaining before it hits Florida?

If so - that would be a Cat 5 hitting Miami :o

Hours and hours of coverage of hurricane Harvey which hit Texas recently on the BBC News. Irma, the most powerful strom on record gets a few minutes which will obviously increase if it hits Florida.
Hurricane Harvey killed 71 people, was the wettest Hurricane in the continental US history, caused historic flooding and was the most expensive natural distaster in Texas history. At last count Irma had around10 confirmed deaths.

You can' blame the BBC for bias until Irma causes havoc and loss of life on the same scale. The areas affected are much less populated, so far.

The states are one of the richest countries in the world whereas the Caribbean Islands have some of the poorest part of the world. And if you are going to use deaths as an reason for the BBC's OTT coverage then the floods in Asia at the same time left 1200+ dead and millions homeless. The BBC ironically reported that Asia was concerned that no one seem to care what was happening, I say ironically as the BBC gave it little air time preferring instead to broadcast interviews with anyone in the US who might have something to say no matter how insignificant.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but America is an English speaking Western country that we have close ties with. Asia is on the other side of the world and most of them don't speak English. We associate more with America, we have lots in common culturally. Generally people care more about what happens in America than even most of Europe, let alone Asia. It's also very easy to cover news in the USA because they have English speaking media companies that work closely with our own media companies. Hope that helps.

I don't see what the wealth of a country has to do with the news worthiness of the event?
How many people in the UK would be able to understand an interview in a foreign language?

The flooding in Asia was the worst in 10 years. The Flooding in Texas was the worst in recorded history.

And I fail to see what the percentage of available airtime has on anything. News agencies report on events they believe their viewers are most interested in. The division of airtime between different events has absolutely no bearing on what the news agency believes is more important.

UK Police are getting sent to the Caribbean to help the security on the British Overseas Territories. I wonder what is left?

Re: coverage, it is true that outlets in the UK are going to focus more on the events in the US, for the reasons mentioned, but the same thing happens in reverse too. Most people I talk to here don't know or care about what's going on weather-wise in the Atlantic just now, just as no one talks about it when we get pounded by a massive typhoon most years (unless it's to complain about the price of components increasing).

Happy to add myself in to that, I have no ties to America at all, so it's fairly irrelevant to me. My sympathies to all those affected though, of course.

Scary stuff, it's predicted to now go west... towards me now.

We're ready, got gas, water, food. Will load the trailer and load the truck if we need to get out.

Good luck mate, hopefully you don't need to relocate temporarily. Wasn't it forecast to head East? Has that changed?

Aaaaaand holiday's been cancelled! :(
We're supposed to be visiting the Caribbean including St. Martin and Tortola in about 8 weeks time.

After they've been battered by the storms that follow this I fear there'll be nothing left.

Thoughts to everyone caught up in it all..
