Hurricane Sandy

And it's started...

Winds have actually strengthened, Atlantic City already badly flooded, 10,000 already without power.

And it's only just touching the East Coast.......this is looking bad :(

So are we expecting major casualties or just some damaged rooftops and a little flooding.

There will be casualties. I don't want to over-dramatize this, but...

"This is the most catastrophic event that we have faced and been able to plan for in any of our lifetimes," Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy warned.

I'm nearly 1,000 miles to the west, thankfully!

Your signature is amusing given how ignorant this post was... The storm is still a hurricane.

spare me your diatribe. This storm was downgraded on saturday already http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/27/hurricane-sandy-regains-strength?newsfeed=true. then storm regained hurricane cat 1 strength and it is expected to be downgraded again.

FYI Hurricane Irene in 2011 was a Cat 3 then downgraded to Cat 1 when it hit US eastern shore and the hype wasnt as big as this one.

I actually lived through a stronger hurricane in Long Island sound NY back in 1985 - Gloria which was a Cat 3 and even stepped outside in the eye of the storm. sure there was a surge, branches fell, some damage was done to property, some beach houses too close to the waterfront even were gobled up, even a few recorded deaths, but it wasn't the end of the world.

the storm will pass, damage will be done and it will be forgotten before Christmas shopping season begins ;)

How can you dismiss this so easily? The circumstances are very different. Irene and Gloria did not make landfall in the same way as Sandy is going to, i.e head on. Sandy is the largest Atlantic hurricane in history. And while Sandy is Cat 1 at the moment, and will downgrade/become post tropical, the storm surge is the problem. Add to that the precipitation anticipated in combination with the weather system it's expected to merge with. This isn't the same, it's not all about hurricane category.

On the news there it said it was a once in a lifetime storm that will be forever remembered, not just in America but around the world.

The american media does like to spice things up right enough.

Where's your brother? My wife is very close to Chester.

A few miles from west deptford. He's going to stay in the house (probably go down to the basement if it gets too bad), although there's already 30+ people in the local school which is a designated shelter. Hope your wife has somewhere to hunker down :)

His step-daughter works at Harrah's Philly so quite close to your wife? She is still on site as it's an emergency shelter as well. Some of the Atlantic City boardwalk is already flooded apparently.

Scary biscuits!

lunarwolf, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't get involved please.

I'm supposed to be going to New Jersey next week. Do I need to take scarf and gloves?
That's a given for this time of year anyway. Normal temp is just above freezing right now.

I'm nearly 1,000 miles to the west, thankfully!
Ditto. They are expecting 32 foot waves on Lake Huron this evening, winds from 45 to 70 MPH in gusts. Just for comparison, the waves that took out the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior were between 25 and 30 feet. This is gonna be a heck of a storm, even this far inland.

one thing is for sure if Obama plays his cards right this could clinch him the win in next week's election

to be continued :D

Or it could be a complete disaster fro him, like Hurricane Katrina was for Bush. Only time will tell, and the election looks to be to close to call.

It's not even going to make landfall directly onto New York City, about 100 miles away at least, but it looks awful there already. God knows what it's like in New Jersey.
