Hurricane Sandy

A few miles from west deptford. He's going to stay in the house (probably go down to the basement if it gets too bad), although there's already 30+ people in the local school which is a designated shelter. Hope your wife has somewhere to hunker down :)

His step-daughter works at Harrah's Philly so quite close to your wife? She is still on site as it's an emergency shelter as well. Some of the Atlantic City boardwalk is already flooded apparently.

Scary biscuits!

lunarwolf, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't get involved please.

lol. going to basement if area gets flooded isn't smartest thing one could do

what makes you the qualified expert? I have been through bigger hurricanes before and lived in NY for 15+ years and boston for 4 years ;)

Bigger by category, not bigger by size, and not bigger by projected track, or circumstance.

Update for those saying it's only cat 1 and weakening:

From Tri-State Weather:

Breaking Weather News: Aircraft reconnaissance aircraft currently flying into Hurricane Sandy is reporting rapid pressure drops which means rapid intensification is occurring. They are indicating 99mph sustained winds at the surface of the storm, which would make this a strong Category 2 hurricane. The storm would need sustained wind speeds of just 110mph to be a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

size means nothing. just affects more states (ie wider geographical area) that doesn't mean areas will get hit harder than higher category hurricanes. it will just be windy and rainy in more states ;)

Gloria or Irene made glancing landfall at low tide, and quickly moved on. Sandy is expected to be slow moving. Sustained storm conditions regardless of hurricane status could be devastating surely. Sure, wind damage might not be as high as in higher category hurricanes, but I don't think that's the concern...

He's not in a flood area, so it would be rain only and his sump pumps *should* be able to cope. He is however very close to the predicted path of the storm. I only said he'd be using the basement if he had to

So you lived in NYC for 15 years - how many times did they shut down the transit system in that time for weather related reasons?

You say you've lived through bigger hurricanes, yet Sandy is the largest in Atlantic Hurricane history...

do you know Aesop's fable of the Boy who cried wolf?

sure it's a storm, people should take precautions. but this is not the first storm to hit the US east coast. this is completely being blown out of proportion by media to almost hysterical level. the picture in OP just illustrates this

stop drinking the kool aid. it makes for entertaining and sensational news, but let's keep it real.

Just ignore him, he's trolling as he obviously has some kind of storm envy. Hope your brother stays safe.

I don't think the OP picture was meant to be serious :-/ there is no reason to blow this out of proportion, people like being evacuated??

Its now been measured getting close to 95MPh, near Cat 2 seems like it may end up as a cat 2 (just). Looking at some live pics the rain with the wind looks to be the big concern, oh and the other storm getting dragged into with a couple of feet of snow.

As has been pointed out to you several times, the category doesn't mean anything in this case. This is a pretty unique series of events unfolding.

lol everytime there is a hurricane, media hype it up = higher ratings and politicians milk these events. year in year out. they just can't stop from sensationalizing. but this time it's even worse.

stay tuned and we will see if it's as bad as they say ;) it won't and then they will say it's because authorities did such a good job at preparing and they avoided catastrophe. good for Obama's election bid next week, am sure he will rinse the photo ops
