Just went to turn on my PC and, BANG!!!!

Sparks flew out of the side of the PSU and a very stong "electrical" smell, hoping that it hasn't taken anything else with it :(

Not impressed !

You wouldve thought that these should be better than Q-Tecs ;) given the price.

Join the club. There seems to be a lot of these 'breaking' at the moment. It shouldn't of taken anything with it but you'll just have to wait and see. Get a corsair BTW

Mine went wonky recently, just slowly broke itself :\ But when it did finally go my motherboard and DVD-rom drives both took a bashing :(
Hope your stuff is ok mate

Just out of intrest HEADRAT, how long have you had it?
Asking because i've had mine for 6 months now & after all these reports of them going **BANG**... I'm seriously thinking of buying a new PSU before mine go's ***BANG*** too.

I've had it for about 8 months, I honestly think there must be some kind of defect with these PSU, when they "go" they really "go"!!

I won't be buying another Hyper that damn sure.

Thet seem to be ok for a good few months before the problems kick in,mine was around 9 months old before it went :(

My mate has had one for over a year now,in a machine @ stock settings with no problems at all, maybe they just don't like under heavy loads 24/7

Only had mine 4 months before it crapped out, stear well clear. I ended up getting it exchanged for an artic jeantech 600w. Thankfully the store I had bought it from had run out of Hipers!

:O)

Interesting topic.
We've sold loads of Hipers at work and only had the odd one here and there go wrong.
I've also fitted loads to new builds and to date, I've not had one come back for replacement.
I know Antec had a problem with their smart power range last year and they ceased production of the range.
In Antecs case it was down to the contractor they used for the assembly of their power supplies.
Basically they changed the specification of a capacitor witout Antecs consent and it created no end of problems.
I've not heard of anything similar regarding Hiper but I wonder if it could be a similar scenario.

I think taring all the hypers with the same brush is wrong, all of the threads I have seen with them going bang are for the 580 modular, maybe this was produced too quickly following the success of the 480 type R and hence all the problems.

My 480 type R is still going strong well over a year after installation with no funny smells, sounds and the fan is still working.
