I am so sick of my pathetic computer

£ up front to fix this one i think. maybe order a new mobo, or pick one up from the high street. get stable with a new mobo, and then either return the ds3 for a replacement (then sell the replacement) or just bin it as a bad job.

personally id stick with other boards, my last gigabyte gave me similar errors. i changed to a dfi ultra-d 939 and it was solid as a rock.

ive now gone c2d on an abit fatal1ty fp-in9. not recommended particularly, but i can have multiple bf2 sessions, leave it torrenting, watch movies and have weeks of uptime without an issue.

I wouldn't blame the PSU for your problems at all, the bad thing about these forums is that once people catch on that things have been failing then suddenly that item is the worst thing since non-sliced bread.
Heaps of folk have tpye-r's and they are powering some high end systems, just because people have seen failures doesn't mean the system isn't getting enough power, it's not a qtec.

Would be good if you cold get hold of another motherboard to test out, that's where my finger would point to.

I didn't jump at the Hiper band wagon. I was the first to mention it, and simply said that MY type-r doesn't seem to be feeding my PC enough power, and that it could be his PSU that's the problem.

It's also an easy part to swap out and use another one, without losing all settings etc. and needing reinstalls.

Well I've just reformatted again.

All I have installed other than Windows now is Armed Assault and Windows Messenger. I'm going to leave it like that for a few days. I'm already getting bad feelings though, Control Panel should load instantly on a fresh machine not take 3-4 seconds..

Strange, as XP just loads it all as one, and on a fresh install it should be nearly instant.

Vista loads each item in the CP individually...which can take some time.

If I had a decent spare PSU I'd say you could test it, but all I have is an unbranded 500w one...which'd be worse than the Hiper. :p

As for testing the mobo, if you can get hold of socket 775 one, then you should probably also check that out too, just in case like.

Cheer up Fox, at least it doesn't sound like it's your fault!

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to update the bios on my old DS3.

The lights here flickered in the middle of writing the new bios, and the PC tried to reboot. Note the word tried :o

Next time, I'll remember not to do bios updates in a thunderstorm!

Still, I've now got a shiny new P35C-DS3R that I'm happy with, so it wasn't a complete loss :D

Look on the bright side, it could be your Beemer mysteriously slowing down.

I'm now playing CS Source. It does it in CS Source as well. Every so often, everything just turns into a slideshow, all the audio IIISSSSSSS RREEEAALLLLLYYY SLLLLLOOOOWWWWEEDD DOOOWWWNNNNN etc :(

Completely fresh system, latest drivers, NOTHING installed bar Windows, Armed Assault, Windows Messenger and Steam.

Well if you want to chuck it away, my boot is always open, and Plymouth isn't that far ;)

Seriously, you may well find you want to run memtest. The fact that after a while it builds up and does something like this says to me it could be a memory leak, or that the memory is erroring when it gets to a certain point.

Have you tried running it with just the one stick, the one in DIMM1, if it still does it, try the one that is in DIMM2 in 1 by itself.

Another thing to throw into the bucket of irritants and things to try.

I seem to remember something like this happening to me ages ago...but I've forgotton how I fixed it, or what happend...or what PC it was on.

Ah...poo!

Just had a thought, how much noise does your graphics card make? Does the fan run properly?
It could be that it's overheating (I don't know if you have an aftermarket cooler or not).
If your case cooling isn't up to much then that may not help...how hot does the CPU get?

I know on my previous machines I've played games for solong before that I've nearly melted the graphic card...my X1800XT got really hot during stalker and would often crap out mid game, dropping FPS etc.

Temps are fine, CPU idles at 30 never goes above 50. It's all in a nice Cooler Master ATCS201 with no less than 4 seperate case fans :(

have you checked the psu rails in the BIOS or using software for the 3.3v, 5v and 12v? if any are out of 3-5% tollerance it could be the PSU being the issue.

if the rails are okay its probably the motherboard causing the problems or the chipset drivers IMO.

What are you checking the temps with?

The standard Gigabyte app is less use than indicators to a BMW owner :p

Core Temp or Intel's own TAT app sem to give more honest, if scarier numbers - according to easytune my Quad is running at 50C, but both Core Temp and TAT say it is at 68C

my last system was a 9800xt and 2600+ barton the psu was dying its death and took a few components with it hard drive/dvd writer but an early sign was that games were becoming jerky and laggy.
may be the psu like others have said

Well let's look at it logically...

gf card - unlikely because sound is sometime slow too
psu - possible but I'd expect BSOD's and reboots rather than a slideshow
cpu or gfx temps - already ruled out?
ram - possible but it's already tested out ok
cpu - possible
motherboard - possible and most likely I'd say

You do realise that graphics cards can freeze up the whole system, resulting in jumpy sound and 1 frames per 5 seconds?

I've spoken to him on MSN and told him to try another graphics card. When he does, we'll see what to do next.
