I can remember when .........

The first computer I ever used was made by the BBC and it had floppy disks bigger than my hands

Walkmans were all the rage, but they were also bigger than my hands and had crap sound quality compared to today

When I bought records, they were bigger than my head

A large television set was probably 14" screen, and clad in wood, and you had to get up to change channel (there were only 4 channels but they were GOOD)

The sets were also huge, and needed 2 people to move them!

Cars were smoky and rusty, dog turds were white (and littered the pavements) and we had to go and knock on mates doors to see if they were in to come out and play, none of this texting, mobile or internet malarkey

My gran's telly took so long to warm up the program had nearly finished by the time the picture came on.

Ed the Duck!

:D

I remember being able to disappear for hours by myself or riding my bike for miles without anyone worrying where I was.

Having to call my mates on their house phone from my house phone if we wanted to meet and if they weren't in, tough! :p

Getting all excited about the easter bonnet and egg decorating competitions at the local club. :)

Being able to take all the kids (4 or 5 kiddies and a push-chair) by myself when I was 8 - 10 to the "chocolate box" for sweets on a sunday lunch.

Kylie and Jason in neighbours! \o/

Daleks were actually scary!

Not being allowed "pop" till after school and swapping crisps at lunch!

The furthest you were went with a boyfriend was a kiss! :p

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

I can remember when:-

Lots of shops where closed on a Wednesday and no shops were open on a Sunday.

The Hairy Cornflake ruled the airwaves.

Powercuts and rubbish on the streets (winter of discontent)

Top Trumps were Top

Childrens TV lasted about 50 minutes a day

The Chopper bike was the ultimate street machine

Bjorn Borg was the ulitmate tennis player

Alf Garnet views seemed everyday and reasonable

Carry On Films > *

I also remember the First Pannini Football album I filled and it was Espana '82 and playing swopsies to get Bryan Robson and finish it off :D

Oh! I remember my first job and being really pleased at being paid £2.50 an hour when working 7pm till 11pm on a friday night and then a whole £3 for an hours work sat morning and sunday morning! :D

And with that £16 I could take my little sister to the cinema on saturday morning, buy a maccy d's each for lunch and do a pay or everything I needed during the week! :D

Hamlet adverts on the tele and the vitalite song :p

Edit... http://www.rescue193uk.org/page13/page13.html

When a Wagon Wheel seemed to last forever as was roughly the size of your head!

Feeling "funny" when watching the lady on the Flake adverts.

When SMASH robots were *THE* advertising gimmick of the century.

When BigTrak was the only think you wanted for Xmas (apart from a ZX Specturm, Star Wars toys, Lego etc .etc. etc.)

When "Space Dust" was cool until the first time you nearly choked to death on it.

Yeah Hamlet adverts, just who was Carlos Fandango? Always fancied a set of his wheels.........

Lady wise, Floella Benjamin did it for me.....

I remember when:

Minimum adult fare on London underground and buses was one and a half pence, (and that is when it was 240 pence to the pound)

No first and second class post. Everything was two and a half pence.

Two shillings to get into a top league football match. For boys it was one shilling, (but only 9d at Stamford Bridge)

Smallest coin was the farthing (960 of them to the pound)

and many similar.

I remember getting very excited to go round a mate's house who had just got a colour tele. I remember there was a John Wayne western on and seeing the bright blue sky, mountains and the horses was just amazing.

Being born in the 50s I'm proud to say I watched England win the Word Cup - I wonder how many of you young 'uns will be able to say that in the future :D

The test card on BBC not being a 'WTF is this' moment. This happened a few weeks back, and that was precisely my reaction. So used to TV being on air all the time now...

VCR's coming in for the first time. Ours even had a remote control (well it was actually attached to the player with a cable).

Launch of Channel 4. I was very young at the time. But hey, 4 channels! It was almost like being in America. :D Most people's early memories seem to be of Countdown, I always remember it for The Tube! And of course the dodgy movies they used to show. Now they're far too mainstream. :( ;)

Star Wars being shown at Xmas, and me being scared of Darth Vader.

Being able to walk to school on my own at 6 years old. A good 15-20 minutes too. Does that happen now?

Getting a BMX in the early 80's, and taking a strange dislike to anyone who had Raleigh Burner, or worse, a Mongoose... Those boys were always troublemakers! (This should stir a few passions. :p)

Going even further back. Television closed down after children's programmes, and restarted at 7:30 for the evening. The break was in order for children to go to bed before the evening programmes started.

Also: only one TV station, and so TVs did not have a tuning button. When ITV was first introduced, all existing sets had to be adapted in order to get this new station.
