More powerful yes, but it's a bigger, heavier car.

Which one are you looking at? Why spend so much on such an ordinary car?

There was an FSI for about 7ish.. had quite a few gubbins on it that I have on the Mini... I need to see what the Mini is worth in P/X too yet..

What would you suggest, for example, for the most part im looking at Golf/Clio and the like, out of all the models that would be most easy to insure, what would you choose?

What do you want from a car? Something dull yet reliable or something fun to own?

I dont want something that will rip my face off, but at the same time I want something more exciting to drive than the one, as for the handling etc, I know I would be downgrading because for the most part the handling on the Mini is going to be hard to beat..

Well the Golf 1.6 FSI is not going to offer you driving excitement. What about a Mini Cooper?

Yeh, A cooper is tempting.. my Mum has a black one.. i'll have a quick peek on my local dealers website, see what they have in stock, perhaps an older one..

another vote for the fabia vrs, remapped with a uprated intercooler will see 200 odd bhp with loads of torques. they are really cheap to insure too, i just got a quote and it was £1600 FC (19, 0ncb, in my own name), i've heard there a bit understeery but suspension upgrades will soon sort that out, just like the golf gt tdi.

infact, i might even get a fabia vrs next, there really well priced.

No, buy a used private one, 2001/2002, for about 6-7k. Spend less, have more cash, be happier.

You will want to seriously think about upgrading the suspension and brakes on the fabia vRS before even thinking about going near to the 200bhp mark.

They are good little cars (I had one for 8ish months) however they can be a handful in the wet (due to torque steer).

Yeh, you have a point.

Is there anything else you would be considering? im gonna go for a test drive in the other cars too, I just wanna see for myself how they feel so i can get an idea of all the pros and cons of each of the cars.

bell

ive got some really good quotes with them, specially on diesel cars.

320d was under 2k FC, but the coupe 3 series were expensive

EDIT, that quote for £1600 also included 1 fault accident £5500, and 3 points SP30

I think what Fox is trying to say is that your budget will get a very nice Polo 1.2. Cheap on insurance and very nippy and loaded with kit. Cant think of anything better for the money. Might as well spend the whole budget on one as you want it to be as new as possible to avoid it breaking down.

my two pennies... focus tdci remapped to 145bhp... 48 mpg.. and very cheap insurance, and a really good car...

my remapped focus did about 42-45 remapped, more on a long trip.
in all honestly and speaking from experiance a 1.8 tdci is far from really good. i would not recommend one at all.

Sorry for slightly off topic but wasnt new thread worthy, do remaps effect insurance premiums? And if you bent the car and it was discovered you hadnt admitted to the 'mod' then the company wouldnt pay up?

my insurance company wanted an extra £89, but i never declared it in the end, its very hard for them to tell, and even when i had an accident they never came out to check it.

wtf?!

why do you want rid of your mini?? remapped to cooper power its pretty quick and although the mini was made for puffs and slappers its actually a good car, great drive, well built ect.. i'd wait till your 21 then get something else, swapping for say a fabia vrs seems more of a sidestep and certainly a down grade in terms of handling.

Polo is a good shout - VW are doing some amazing deals on the 1.2 E model at the moment, £10k could see you in an 07 plater..
