i dont know what to do with my life

If I could roll back 12 years to being 16 I would be straight into an apprenticeship.

I have a fairly well paid job that I landed lucky in as its an oddball line of work. I don't enjoy it though but I'm happy plodding along.

however I see a lot of people struggling to get jobs as they have 0 work experience in the field. especially when they have degrees/masters.

You can always leave after the apprenticeship is complete and go to uni if you want to further your knowledge but at least you will have a good couple of years of experience which seems to be more sort after by employers (in my experience)

I'm 38, and frankly, I am pretty much just drifting along in life, albeit comfortably. I have an OK job (IT) working for a good company for a slightly better than average salary, but it could be worse I think.

I did know what I wanted to do when I was younger - engineering - I tried very hard to get myself into an apprenticeship, that, had I succeeded, I am sure I would have been financially far better off, and far more skilled than I am today. Problem was, there were very few apprenticeships back in the days when I was looking, and the competition was fierce, and frankly, I was out of my depth against some of these people, despite being relatively intelligent.

So I ended up in IT, which is something I've always been decent at - not an expert, obviously, otherwise I'd be earning a lot more.

What message can you take away from this? Well, you may not know what you want to do, but ultimately, you may end up doing something you didn't expect to be doing. Life is just like that, really.

Just do what you want. Wait for the robots to come along and then kick back and crack open a beer, claim your Universal Income whilst all the engineers have to graft day in day out.

Unless they figure out a way to keep us alive a good time longer or forever then you'll be 6ft under or a pile of ash before this happens. UBI is a pretty tragic solution to an economy that needs capitalism to thrive.

It’s already started in Finland and Canada..

yeah they get a pittance in Finland, pretty much most unemployed people would need to move out of London and go live in some Ghettos elsewhere (like some derelict former mining towns or something) if you wanted to introduce universal basic income like that

Depends on the model, in some the basic income just becomes the new poverty line and if you want more then you have to do things that benefit society.

It just changes the reward so professions like teachers, nurses, doctors, social workers, carers, engineers, researchers etc or just cleaning up your local area (people that actually make a difference) get more than some CEO who's managed to increase sales of some tat by 5% or increased the cost of utilities for everyone while putting nothing back in to improve the network etc etc.

Still need people to buy the tat though to fund the UBI. :p

You know the teacher teaches that CEO that sells the tat and the doctor looks after that guy who sells the tat and so on.. and he is the CEO..

I wished I had access to such informed advice when I was OP's age!

If you crashed and burned in my era; it was a chat at the local Job Centre. Seriously, there is some really helpful guidance within this post (regardless of age). I hope you use it. Good luck!
