I don't like going out for dinner.

i'm with the OP, i've never enjoyed eating out, primarily the cost but there are other reasons.
a prime example, I recently went out for a family birthday meal. i decided i'll be a bit 'adventurous' and get the chicken supreme. my jaw dropped at two tiny little pieces of chicken on the bone, a small rectangle of potato and a few veg.
it was nice enough tasting but wouldn't have filled a hole in your tooth. everyone else was stuffing their faces with burgers and chips (there's a reason why people stick to the classics).
and tipping :( most of the time i don't do it. i've already paid stupidly inflated prices for something i could generally rustle up myself, i'm not throwing more cash away.
so for something that should be a fun pleasant experience i normally end up with a feeling of being ripped off, so i just avoid it a lot of the time.

Fine dining is stupid. I mean if you've got more money than you know what to do with then you may as well, but if you are of average wealth I just can't see the appeal of spending a fortune on having a slightly better tasting version of something in your mouth for a few seconds.

"Yes I'd like to pay hundreds for this bottle of champagne because it might taste slightly better than the one in Sainsbury's for £20".

It's madness unless you have senseless amounts of money.

All stuff designed for rich people is like that. It's stupid when you actually think about it all. Same with fashion etc

I do still like a reasonably priced meal out though. Would never be bothered about fine dining at all.

Similar logic applies to high end phones and graphics cards.

I get what you're saying in general with this, but there can be quite a significant difference with the higher priced ones. You can certainly get some nice ones for £40ish, I sometimes see Bollinger on offer around that price and that's pretty good.

I think that's ok. It's more the absurd stuff that's like hundreds, or possibly even £1000s.

It's just stupid stuff for rich people and is in no way that much better tasting in relation to it's price.

Oh yeah, absolutely, I've had a couple of bottles up to £300 as a one-off sort of treat but definitely wouldn't go for the rarer / older vintages that are £1,000+ unless I won the lottery or something.

Kind off. I mean the flagship Nvidia card is always silly, I agree.

However the multiples in terms of what you get for the money arent anywhere near as ludicrous as things in fine dining and fashion.

I disagree. I’ve spent hundreds (and on a couple of occasions over a thousand) on fine dining. I consider it a whole experience. Yes, it’s definitely not worth it, but it’s a great enjoyable few hours. You’d spend similar money on a west end show, or even a concert, and it’s hours and hours of great service and brilliant food.
Plus, I reckon I could cook most restaurant food pretty well but fine dining is a different story.

Not for me. I find food and cooking some of the most boring things on the planet and I think humans waste insane amounts of time and resources and needless environmental damage in importing and exporting every possible thing to eat that we can find.

Fine dining ranks alongside the fashion industry for me. IE stupid and largely pointless.

Fine dining is surely virtually nothing compared to the impact of mass consumption in supermarkets, fast food and chain restaurans. Fine dining must be a very small % of the entire industry and not in itself comparable to the entire fashion industry.

Not to mention that a lot of fine dining is focused on locally produced goods because they're often fresher, quality control is better and it's a huge selling point (excuse for markup). They also push for better quality meat etc as opposed to battery chickens used by KFC etc.

If you're not a foodie then I can see why you'd despise fine dining, I'd also argue that most things in the modern world are stupid and pointless.

Going back to my earlier point about computer parts, mining rare materials to play games and mine bitcoin.

Coffee, chocolate, bottled water, the music industry, Formula 1/motorpsort/all transport, horse/dog racing, football/all sport, the Olympics, Amazon, all electronics, the film/TV industry... All doing their bit to destroy the planet.

Food and cooking are amongst the most interesting things on the planet to me.
We shall agree to disagree!

Quite a few places we visit pride themselves on sourcing within a certain radius of the restaurant, typically 25 miles, unlike as @sigma writes above and are at least supporting their local economies.

We often look for good small plate, while you wait or good selections of starters and will share 6 plates if the main menu is a bit samey or not that interesting to us.

Couldn't imagine not going out to enjoy good food tbh.

Would you hate it so much if someone else was paying?

I'd rather do something else expensive. In fact I can think of an absolute **** load of stuff I'd like to spend money on or have money spent on me for before "fine dining"

Literally bottom of the barrel for me, but I appreciate it's subjective. I just struggle to understand it, just like the fashion industry.

I really do hate the “I don’t like something or I’m too poor to do such and such therefore I think it’s a waste of time” attitude, it really is pathetic. If you don’t like something then that’s ok, not everyone likes everything. To say you don’t understand is just BS, it’s just childish behaviour. There is nothing to understand unless you think no one should enjoy something unless you do.

You see it can be applied to just about everything, so why spend on anything above the basic level if that’s the case
