I don't understand the point of 4k

This. I DON'T CARE. Now have a wonderful Christmas people.

If you don't care, then surely just don't read and post in this thread?

Personally I welcome the idea of UHD/4K, but can't see it gaining any real ground until:

- Internet services improve for Streaming at decent bitrates to become viable
- Satellite/Freeview systems can deliver content again at decent quality levels
- Optical media gets standardised to just 1 format by removing the older formats (instead of DVD/Bluray/and UHD Bluray).

4k is somewhat useless in my own opinion. I'd much rather they used these new advanced compression formats to supply us proper 1080/60 video from all source. But that doesnt sell TVs so...

I welcome UHD/4k...sort of.

In physics we learn the definition of resolution as the smallest perceivable difference in an image that can be seen.

I'm sure I don't have this right and may be confusing pixel pitch but is the point/distance at which 4k WOULD be of benefit the same distance as moving toward a 1080 screen until you can discern the pixels?

In my head that makes sense...and would mean were gonna need some BIG displays to capitalise on the increased resoltuion.

oh really????

how many people actually buy blu rays?

i own about 3 and thats because i got one for free and the other was part of a launch ps3 console bundle. the other i bought because we needed something to watch that night.

so that's since blu ray launched i've bought about 3 of them.

the reason why because it will be superceded with time. i own about 400 dvd's and when blu ray came out you realised how stupid it was to buy physical media and now they just sit there.

i feel sorry for the guys who have ploughed thousands into blu rays.

no doubt 8k media will be out in 10 years time. then 16K, etc, etc.

buying physical media has became a thing of the past, digital media is the future.

Please don't feel sorry for me! ;)
Your obviously not really a movie fan like myself... :D

Everyone I know bought dvd's when they dropped to realistic prices years ago and soon moved to buying Blu-rays once they became the norm...

Best of all, we can watch and enjoy our hundreds of movies on our TV's or Projectors for the rest of our lives without the need for any internet connection, let alone the super high speed connection you'll need for streaming 4k (Streaming 8k/16k? really??).

Although I still use Netflix and have Amazon prime, I have no need to pay a subscription for good movies if I so choose...

Hell, I watched The Life Aquatic DVD on my 60" TV tonight and really enjoyed watching 100" screening of the Ant-Man Blu-ray in 3D on my Projector the other night...
The quality of DVD is still pretty good and Blu-ray still awe-inspiring... 4k will just be the next level to enjoy!
Embrace the future... Don't shy away! ;)

I'll be upgrading and enjoying 4k once it's mainstream myself and buying 4k Blu-rays...
Why?
Because real movie fans and collectors prefer the hard copy... Always have and always will... ;)

Give me a good 55-60" 1080p oled any day of the week. I had a rather heated discussion, almost argument with the neighbor of a friend over this subject not too long ago. It only got so heated as he frantically tried to justify his purchase of a uhd tv, the foundation of his argument.... "yeh but it's 4k, so it's better".
Really? Does the general public's ignorance and disposable attitude go so deep as to £2k on a tv because 'yeh it has a 4 and a k in the name sir, it has to be better'

People just seem to love spending money for no apparent reason. I wouldn't be surprised if the poeple touting that 4k is the only thing to own and don't even realise they are not watching 4k or any where near are the very same who swore blind plasma was always inferior to lcd.
Oh and those led t.v's, have to be better yeh? 'what do you mean its just a led strip, not true led array? na mate you aint got a clue you like, go back to your plasma'.:o:rolleyes:

I SEE A PATTERN.

Sorry to wade in but god damn this is one plonk of a post. I love movies and I would NEVER buy physical media, it is a thing of the past and the people who stubbornly cling to it are simply throwing their money away.

We live in a world of fibre internet connections now... who care if you need internet access to download a movie when it takes 10-20 minutes? Not to mention that not having a physical collection makes you feel less obligated to view things and doesn't limit your perceived choice of selecting only from what you have.

I'm happy you like your collection, must be good for nostalgia reasons, but please don't pretend it somehow makes you any more of a movie buff than the rest of us.

At one point i enjoyed the display of media, it made a nice center piece, it helped in no way that digital media was horrendously managed up until a couple of years ago.
Then things like xbmc took hold, amazon and netflix really started to take off and now kodi and the others are just so slick and well managed that the aesthetic is present in a new form. I love digital media now. i have storage and a available back up at all time now so can watch all my digital media for the rest of my life.

Yeah, I had a conversation recently with someone who was trying to tell me how awesome it was playing xbox games in 4K on his new tv.
I tried to explain that it probably wasn't even putting out a 1080p image more often than not and then gave up when he couldn't understand a bloody thing I was saying :p

As long they're happy.

That is a tad different in terms of stupidity though, to discerning the difference between average 1080p and 4k feeds. :p

Yup :D

Always has done and always will do. "Forget the quality, feel the width."

Wait till you try downloading a proper 4k film at 150gb, you wont be doing that in 20 mins :p.

I would never download a 100% uncompressed 4k rip, it would be pointless on anything less than an absolutely massive TV.

But I do have 1GBit up/down fibre, so 50GB wouldn't take long.

There's a 30GB UHD version of Xmen: Days of Future past I found yesterday.

Uses the x265 codec. Looked really good on my TV but alas it had hardcoded subtitles.

Before anyone complains, I do subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime...

That would be blu-ray compression... not uncompressed. Still good bitrates, however.

We're getting 0.5Gbps in our new place... so 100GB would take under half an hour from a good source :D Not bad... I like the idea of streaming decent quality 4K.

That'll be a pretty poor compression ratio... the resonable quality compression films I've seen have been in the 70-90GB range.

Love how SGTMASON is a LOTR fan. :D

Ha! I know 1 person with a fibre optic connection...
Most people can't get it their area!

And you think paying out your very real and hard earned money to actually physical own nothing is a great idea???... :D

Poor choice if you ask me... ;)

How can he be throwing money away?

He is getting a physical copy, not digital, and the physical copy is usually cheaper than a digital download, with more extra's, and usually able to provide a better viewing experience for a fraction of the cost of a media PC.

True movie buffs buy physical media for more than just the movie, blatantly obvious because you simply cannot download collectable casework, limited editions, and memorobilia. putting files on a server and charging full whack for a digital copy versus the physical media cost is what I call a blatant rip off and throwing money away.

Oh wait, downloaded movies have better than Bluray disc audio and visual ability too, and every PC is set up optimally to play them on an actual TV too, not.

And we will not include streaming in here, because quite frankly, in the UK the streaming options are a joke and well behind what they should have been in terms of audio and video quality, never mind content, way too many old movies are not available.

My personal opinion, PC's are second best to physical media, no if's no buts, a decent Bluray player costs less and offers far better visual and audio results with simple plug and play, with the majority of movies on Bluray usually discounted with extras within sub menu's, it is still the true movie buff way.

I would say those who actually invested heavily in replay equipment and huge colections of physical media were the true buffs, a dying breed in these days of digital media rip offs. Rejoice now that you can simply click on a download, but take time to think about it's beginnings and where it will eventually lead.

Take care of your mammaries, your getting milked.
