I feel like I'm... done with gaming?

That is a good point. Way too many generic copy an paste games today.

I have such a backlog that I either need to play or finish. I can just avoid these types of games for now.

I've been purchasing a lot of old games I originally had in physical form then modding them. What is so nice about those games, very little was dumbed down.

No health bars, no hit awareness direction, no hit markers, no visual aids, no obsessed DLC/perks, no loot boxes to grind.

play mp games with groups on voice coms. i dont get how people can play single player games. voice coms and gaming with friends is the best part of gaming.

While true, not everyone is available at all times. I however have been enjoying single player games on console for a long time now, PC and going solo in multiplayer games. I really love the long story mission quests on consoles and love grinding.

Squad definitely looks a real hoot if you can find the same regular people to hook up with.

I find it best to do a bit of both.

You can just sit back and chill in a single player game. And if you want something faster paced then go with a bit of multiplayer.

Indeed because if you stick to one it'll burn you out. I've seen many twitch streamers get bored and burnt out because they stream the same games due to popularity for the viewing numbers.

I game very little these days, I do not really like the current generation of gaming it's just not the same any more. The golden age has passed.

I'm in my mid thirties so there's plenty of better things to do anyway, so maybe it's a good thing.

In a way yes and no but I can see what you're saying from what I listed at the top. Most games now feel all UI hand holding visual guidance. It's one of the main reasons I turn all that garbage off if the game really lets me. Or I hound the developers to give you the options. I detest todays default visual clutter. People seem to love it. Look at Overwatch for example. I've never played it, watched a lot of it on twitch. It's a real visual mess.

Nearly every online game gets nerfed silly because they all complain and bow down. Too OP, too hard, cheater for getting beat, you name it. They'll complain.

When do you ever see really good fast games with speed, precision, awareness, skill and determination... All most complain about is repetition and/or too hard.

If only the netcode and sound engine was so good in Quake Champions it would be such a great game.

Then there is sim racing. Whole new endless world. It's really just cherry picking the games. It's very exciting. :D

So much fun for the future with that equipment.

100% agree with you! Glad i'm not alone here!

Since I built my first gaming PC back in 2004, I've been pretty keen gamer. Also during my childhood and adolescence a fair bit earlier on the Spectrum and Amiga.

I always looked forward to my Xmas gaming binges, took time off around my birthday to do some gaming, and generally always had a game on the go even if I didn't manage to eke out much time to play.

Earlier this year, though, something odd happened. I was at the point just before the last boss of Dark Souls III when, all of a sudden... I just couldn't be bothered going any further.

I installed Life is Strange: Beyond the Storm, but only got 15 minutes in before I completely lost the desire to play (and I was a huge fan of the first one).

It was like a switch just flipped in my brain that totally removed my interest in games. I've looked through my game libraries and wishlists, but I feel... nothing. Not the slightest desire to play anything. Complete lack of interest for most of this year (I've played Fortnite with my kids, but that's more to share an activity with them than me really enjoying it).

I am really quite surprised by this, but not dismayed, I don't think. This isn't intended to be another help me get back into gaming thread. In fact I think I've probably used my time better since this happened. I'm basically curious if anyone else has experienced this. I'm 42, so maybe I'm just past gaming? I really didn't think this would happen - I'd envisioned myself playing Original Sin 20 or Far Cry 30 in my 70s!

another 42 year old here... :) My gaming comes in waves and troughs.... in general i am on a bit of a trough at the moment.... when this happens i normally try to get something which offers something completely new..... in 2014 this was an oculus rift DK2, in 2016 a rift CV 1..... and last week, to change things up i bought a full sized digital pinball table. I *hope* I get some serious use out of it (because it was blooming expensive) but it certainly offers something completely unique.

I know you said this is not a get you back into gaming post however i cant resist giving my 2p.... maybe it will be of interest to someone else.

if you are bored of what you have, try something new..... and it does not necessarily have to be expensive. if you cant afford to go forward then go backwards. emulation means you can play some games from genres that dont get much love any more.... that said maybe you cant handle the drop in eyecandy??? in which case look away from the "AAA" studios and look to the indies.... a lot of the games i adored in the 8 and 16 bit eras have some spiritual successors made of them, with nice eye candy and still the back to basics gameplay.

if you are in a rut and not enjoying battlefield 1 for instance, then buying battlefield 5 is unlikley to help IME

BTW sometimes too much choice is also the problem, and can be paralysing. there is something to be said for picking say 10 games that you want to play at some point, and hiding all your others and ONLY looking at those ones when you come to play.

Guess you missed my update buried a dozen posts or so up, but turns out what you say was dead right!

The 'something new' in this case being a new UW monitor!

Of course this means a new expensive graphics card upgrade is only around the corner. Which reminds me what an expensive hobby computers can be when you get back into them...

I don't get how people can solely play MP games with no story, proper progression (unlocking a red dot sight, extended mag or new hat is not progression) or immersion in a world.
Not all of us need someone along all of the time and I can enjoy a game just as much on my own as much I can with other people probably more in fact, yes playing with groups is sure a load of fun but its certainly no more or less fun than a good single player experience.

If you limit your view and choice to just MP games you are missing out on so many good games its almost criminal!

Fallout 76 has actually rejuvenated my interest after almost a year out. It's the kind of game i can just take my time and do what I want.. explore, build, quests, battles etc... Ttb, I've been preoccupied but I just got feed up with the "same old same old" and the like of EA cashing in with DLCs and releases every 2 weeks.

excellent. yeah sorry i must admit to not reading the whole 10 pages ;)

glad you have your mojo back.

:D

Also, I now have the dilemma of wanting to play some games again but realising how little free time I have to actually do it in...
lol i have that too..

back in the day i had lots of time to play and not enough spare cash to buy the things i wanted.

now adays i mostly buy all the things i want to play but rarely have time play them!!! (eg i bought dishonoured, crysis 3, witcher 1 and 2, and deus ex revolution along with so many other games many many years ago and have never played them.
i own ~15 ps4 games (exclusives that i bought a ps4 pro for... and i have played 2 of them!) and i have more VR titles than i know what to do with.

i reckon i could be a full time - 50hrs a week - gamer for the next 5 years and still not complete my entire games collection.

and (hopefully) next week i will have 60 pinball FX3 tables and 250 visual pinball tables to start on as well!

Elite Dangerous has not helped..... 1500 hrs into that since launch has taken 90% of my gaming time in the last 4 years!

I agree, and the best thing about sim racing is you don't need all the fancy equipment to have fun and be reasonably competitive. I've been having a blast on Assetto Corsa for the past few weeks with a very modest setup (basic wheel clamped to an ordinary computer desk, ordinary office chair, single HD monitor).

Sure, it's possible to go full magpie and go to town on buying all the really expensive kit, and there's nothing wrong in that, but it's not necessary at all - it's skill that's rewarded not spends - which is great.

PS.

When are you joining us on the weekly Time Trials? :)

it's because games are all samey and quite rubbish last few years imo

While old comment, I've been looking at most FPS games on twitch and it's nearly all Battle Royale for multiplayer.

I haven't lost interest in gaming at all but what I do find annoying is how it appears nearly every developer must all follow the same trend.

That is a good point. Way too many generic copy an paste games today.

Don't forget today's pricing, Games have gone from a game costing £'s to a game and a season pass costing more ££'s to a game, a season pass & umpteen mini dlc's costing even more £££'s to a game, a season pass, umpteen mini dlc's & loadsa in-game transactions costing.....

At age 55 in a month I cant be more excited about upcoming path of exile betrayal league start
and as things go, next screen upgrade be a ultrawide 3440x1440 100hz+ one

I started playing Far Cry 5 last night. I played for about 5 hours, till just gone midnight. First time I've played for that long in over 18 months, just haven't found or made the time. After we moved in June, I got a new PC and a 1440p G Sync monitor so I've felt like I owe it to myself to get into something. Really enjoyed playing it last night and I've agreed with my partner that Wednesday will now be gaming night. tbh, though, I will probably play some more tonight as I'm really loving the game. I think for me, it was making the time and finding a game that I really liked.

Just waiting for VR to catch up to my expectations, I keep looking at it, keep looking at but then deep down the old "never buy" first generation demon lands on my shoulder (constantly feel like i am missing out something epic though)

Same here. Waiting for oculus rift cv2 or the valve vr headset which is rumoured to be in the works. Would much rather buy the latter, but with no certainty and release date, I would happily grab a rift cv2 if it comes out first.

I feel the same way. I'd rather wait a bit more until the tech matures more.

Space sims, flight sims and racing sims are just made for VR.

You can get most of the Windows mixed reality headsets for around £150 at the moment. Well worth trying out for such a small amount of money. Especially given you can sell them pretty easily if you don't like it.

We're at least another 1-2 years away from anything that's a massive step up from the current tech IMO.

I definitely have this feeling right now, which is a shame as I am about to have 3 weeks off work. Having just had a decent stint with Two Point Hospital and then AC Odyssey I am now at a loss.

Just Cause 4 - just too pricey for the time I will get out of it.
X4 - I want to love it, but it just seems like every other X game and I just can't be fussed starting all over again (where as both X3 games sucked me into, and I had fun with, the massive grind).
Fallout 76 - Why, just why.

I can't think of much beyond the next single player Fallout or Elder Scrolls that will suck me back into gaming.
