I finally bought an ipod

I must admit I was quite shocked by iTunes myself. My gf has an iPod and it seems far too overcomplicated for my liking. For a start it often doesn't detect the ipod unless it was plugged in when windows booted up (even though it is displayed fine in explorer).

To be honest it's the whole 'library' thing I have trouble getting to grips with. You can't just copy over mp3s into the music folder, you have to add them to the library as well before syncing.

My cheapo ATMT mp3 player (£100 for 20gig around 18 months ago) looks rubbish and has a clunky interface with tiny screen, but as a player it does what I want. Putting music on there couldn't be easier, I just copy it over in explorer (or send-to location) and it picks it all up flawlessly.

My point exactly :D

I mean if you dont mind having a bit of a chunky mp3 player you can get some good deals on old clunky ones.

i sold a 40gb for £60 on the bay recently

At least you didn't get a Sony walkman , I love the walkman looks better, works better than an iPod. BUT the sonicstage app is completely useless, its absolute crap.

I got one of these recently... Owns...

Stupid organization?

It is not stupid at all, what a silly comment.

Also is MP3 a dire format?

Yes, MP3 is a dire format, even at 320kbps. AAC, Apple lossless etc also suck the big one.

Open your Ipod as an external HDD, look at the music folder system THE IPOD USES (NOT ITUNES)... make any sense ? I think not. Whats wrong with using a proper file tree ?

Yea I pursauded my girlfriend to buy an Archos 505(or something) for around €230. It's got a large screen and 40GB storage. The video iPod was €399 at the time and has a teeny tiny little screen that's not anywhere near as clear as the Archos and it only had 30GB. HA!

iPods can go suck my ridges, I will never get one because of the price and because of the software. I like explorer drag and drop, I can do it with any music file on any computer.

One more thing.....i was like  when itunes refused to put the ocean colour scene album i ripped to my computer at a very high bitrate .wav file.

Could have murdered it.

People who moan about iTunes are idiots. As a standalone application it may not be to everyone's liking, but it is the best (software+portable music player) combo in the world and that is fact.

Personally I think anyone who actually WANTS to browse the old fashioned way ie by file/directory on their mp3 player must be a bit geeky. Why on earth would you want that when iTunes organises all your music and it can thus be browsed by album/artist/genre/playcount/rating... anything!

As for Apple Lossless, again if you use iTunes + iPod it is the best. I have 80GB worth of Apple Lossless music. It sounds identical to Flac, but also plays on the iPod. I can also convert my music back to Flac if I ever wanted to. So how Apple Lossless "sucks" is beyond me.

The iPod did not become popular because it's a fashion accessory, it become popular because of it's simplicity and non-computer-geek friendly interface. iTunes is popular because of the same reason, but also because it has personality. I like the idea of seeing how many times I've played each song, and creating smart playlists which show what music I was listening to in, say, June 2004.

I think anything with "i" infront of it is bloody retarded tbh. I mean almost everything is "i" this and "i" that.

Hehe. :o

It's no different to any branding scheme though is it? Damn Microsoft putting the word Microsoft in front of everything! wahghh!!!

Tommy I like to be able to use the same music on one MP3 player with another. Simple as that. iTunes locks all your music in crapple format. One of my gfs mates had a laptop full of music and we were like, yay lets get it off her. But it was all iTunes and we couldn't use it on our mp3 players. That I do not like. Same for sony and any other company that tries to do that.

Quoted for truth tbh :)

I suspect the majority of the 'haters' are PC users, insistent on an explorer window (which you can download if you really want to)

The only restrictive thing about iTunes is the Music Store downloads. All other formats can be converted from and to with ease. If I wanted to I could convert my entire Apple Lossless library to flac, mp3, vob etc and retain ID3 tags too.

lol didnt take long before this thread (yes another thread) turns into a massive flame war.

We seriously need a Flameing section to be honest. :D

hmmm. all my ipod music is in mp3, not 'crapple'. AAC lossless seems to be very good for it's size/quality.

Your friend probs ripped it in aac or m4a, very easy to covert to mp3, you can also take the whole collection of music as it is stored in them my music folder.

Congrats to the OP, good choice

Have had my 4G iPod for about 3 years now, great piece of kit best £210 I've ever spent.

Only had to replace the battery last summer, was only £15! and I did it myself :)

And as above the people who can't work iTunes are just unbelievable.
