I finally bought an ipod

I have had my 30GB 5th gen iPod for about a year and a half and its still going, battery last for ages still as well so I'm happy with mine, it certainly keeps me entertained on the bus.

Same here, i bought my 30gb 5th gen in december 2005 and i have used it every day since then with no problems what so ever. My battery still holds its charge and iTunes does it's job.

Overall very satisfied and great value of money to me.

iPod + Sennheiser CX300's = win

Maybe when they were really expensive iPods were "cool", but not now. It's just another fad that'll soon be replaced by the iPhone or some other expensive toy.

What is all this fad stuff?

They are easy to use, good looking and functional mp3 players.

Have had my 30gb video ipod for about a yr now and i have to say its one of the best, if not the best mp3 player around. Itunes is a pita but once you get used to it then its pretty easy to use.

I use my ipod with a pair v-moda earphones, cost me about £60. The earphones are brilliant, made out of aircraft grade alu and sound awesome. Best pair of earphones ive ever used and unlike other earphones they stay in my ears rather than slipping out. Had a pair of shure e2cs but they caused excessive ear-ache for me ie very uncomfortable they were so have ditched them....sat in my drawer and gathering dust.

Ipod + v-moda earphones = WIN :D:D

These are the ones i have

As in students thinking they're cool.

Some people think wearing sunglasses all the time makes you look cool? Are they a fad?

Apple has sold enough iPods to dominate the MP3 market and gone through many generations of them with no sign of relenting. They aren't a fad.

It's fashionably cool to hate iPods though I guess.

Did I say I hated iPods? I don't, I just think they're a fad amongst students who will soon find something else to think about, which is increasingly looking like the iPhone.

The digital music market is still young and it's predominantly the student market that's buying iPods. How long can Apple keep students interested in them?

I was in the market for an mp3 player and toyed with the idea of getting an ipod, at the end of the day the 60gb Creative Zen Vision M with video support looke a better option, plus the ease of dragging and dropping files straight onto it without having to install a seperate program to copy files onto it. Also the creative has the option of being used as a portable harddrive and has the ability of recieving files without being hooked up to the pc.

It isn't just students who buy them though.

How long can Apple keep students using their MP3 player? Well, as long as students enjoy listening to music I guess. :\

Like I said, it was predominantly students who are buying the iPods. Obviously other people are buying them as well. Whether that's because they're great mp3 players or partly as a fashion accessory seems to be debatable.

My point earlier is how long will students continue to buy iPods once they lose the "cool" factor when other players can do the job at a cheaper price?

I bought the original Nano purely on the fact that it is small and convenient.
Even though I am a student, I don't see it as a fashion accessory or a method to retain my coolnessity.

I throw my nano around and beat it up - just a bit of technology that seems as though it refuses to break! Best £180 spent in ages I think.

I'm still using an old 40giig Creative Zen Xtra. It's the size of a house brick, but the sound quality is still better than any other mp3 player I've heard whether I'm using my £200 headphones or my £20 ones, or running it through the car stereo...it just sounds better than the competition.

All the EAX stuff is just a bit gimmicky and I don't use it much, but even without it...Creative f t w in terms of SQ.

/edit although the eax is useful for making everything the same volume :D

iPods aren't that expensive though are they? It's not like you're saving say, £100, by choosing a different one over an iPod.

Take a look at the shuffle, pretty decent and you only have to look in your nearest gym to see all sorts of people with shuffle's strapped to their arm.

Sure, alternatives are available but the success of the iPod isn't riding on just a cool factor, otherwise they wouldn't of soared. They are actually very good devices and they only thing I could say they need improvement on, is the batteries. Apart from that, they're superb and it's little wonder why so many people have them. Apple produce very good hardware, and have some very talented designers, I think it's this more than the fact of "I'm getting an iPod because they're the latest thing" as they aren't any more. iPods have been out quite a long time and are still going strong. :)

/edit best thing is the batteries, I can still get over 30 hours of playback from the 2 batteries I have and thats after using them for years :D

oops clicked the wrong button.... im blaming the knockout meds im on :p

Personally not a fan but I own a Nano so maybe its a different story for its big brothers.

Thing I hate is Itunes compared to WMP11 running on Vista to me their is no comparison. I have GForce visualiser installed on both WMP and iTunes.

If it is possible to just drag and drop into an iPod I would love to know how, seems very difficult to me although im sure its easy if you know how.

Appart from that the very first time I fired it up and synced it I was impressed small - fairly good capicity + load - replaced the head phones with some in ear jobbies from Sony. My hate onyl started when I tried to put different music on the thing from then on I ditched it and went back to my trusted K800i.

Shame about the ugly looking freak holding it! (If that is you I offer one million pardons)

All I'm saying is that for the price of an iPod you can get something much bigger, with better battery and a better screen if you're going down the video route.

My sister bought one today and theyre a lot of hassel ill tell you that.

Itunes is sucha waste of time, why cant they just let you drag and drop tracks via explorer?
winamp will work with it too iirc.

from what I've seen the main reason people buy iPods is because they tend to have the best £/GB value out of most players.
