i get middle finger when overtaking?

I do quite often get people speed up when I go to overtake them because they are doing 40 in a 60. Once im besides them they suddenly feel the urge to put their foot down.

Do you also wave at people using one finger? I think we might have solved this mystery.

didnt wave with one finger, i was busy trying to tame the 1.4 beast. it was jaw dropping to see something so large (massive compared to the fiesta anway) absolutely rocket away and we were doing at 65 ish.

he also had hazzards and brake lights flashing for the next bend

Yeah that was probably it then :p, I had come out of the thickest part and it was thinning

Although I thought the idea of fog lights was to make you more visible, not to light up the road.

Certainly rear fogs are for visibility. I'm not so sure about front fogs..

I call shenanigans. I reckon it's happened once and twice and OP has decided to blow it all out of proportion.

Front fogs have a maximum height they are allowed to be fitted and are supposed to shine under the fog to the sides of the road. They are fitted to see under the fog on both sides, hence in daylight the offside light shines directly at oncoming traffic.

As usual because VOSA and DVLA don't seem to talk to each other the VOSA rules are not always checked at MoT time hence the fog light alignment is not checked meaning a slightly knocked fog light can be pointing in any direction.

Daylight use of fog lights is, in fact, a road traffic offence.

Andi.

I agree with Fox, if you're routinely getting flashed/gestured then you're doing something wrong. It'll happen sometimes anyway (and some people flash to let you know when you're safe to pull in, which I've never understood - er, I can tell, thanks) but if it's happening all the time? No, you're doing something wrong.

Do you pull right up to their bumper before overtaking? Pull in before there's a safe breaking distance between you and them? Lack lane discipline while overtaking? Have left your fogs on? Are spraying sparks from that missing tyre you've been meaning to get round to replace? Have a dead body trailing behind the car from when you "accidentally" hit that tramp?

he must have been tailgating them or they saw him tanking down the fast lane an a ton...

I'ver never noticed anyone give me the finger... and I usually look at the other drive incase its a large boobed chick and I can oggle...

+1

I've had it before from younger drivers, but then i'm quite a yong looking 26 year old...

Its also an offence to use them at night too if the is no fog, basically any time where viability is not lower than 100 meters they shouldn't be on

I had it once, where i over took someone on an empty B road, they were going along at 40mph, then hit some traffic and they were behind me, stopped at teh traffic lights, and she got out her car and came up to me and had a rant about me over taking on a b road! It was over a mile straight nothing on the roads at all on otherside, And i over took her safely and everything! Just think they get annoyed for no reason, road rage is really getting out of hand, everyone seems to have it nowadays!

Something you are doing is upsetting them.
Either your car is faulty, dodgy lights blinding people, or giving the impression you are using full beams perhaps. (Do you drive around with poorly adjusted fogs lights on?)
OR
You are driving like a tool, and getting people peeved.

Perhaps both?

I get the same nonsense from silly women in the Parent and Child parking at Sainsburys.

Essentialy the issue here is retards who drive slow in nice car for hours at end but when (god forbid) a old car overtakes
Oh no they cant have that so they either scowl and swear at you or try race

Take a real life situation

Its early im driving to uni in the morning on the m4
And someone (you know the ones) is doing about 66 steady in the middle lane
Now the thing is with these types is overtaking them at 70 takes a while but you know im nearly late so i would like to do at least the limit ya know
After all ive gotta be on my way
So heres me in my fiesta 1.25 1998 model doing a solid 70 mph in the right hand lane
And the offending type is a man ( about 5 years older than me )in a 57 plate fiesta zetec s ( crucially with his girlfriend also)
So i naturally start to move past
Its important you understand that i dont think " i wanna race that zetec-s yo innit" nope
Instead it is a car i have a car and it is going slower than mine i had no interest in a race at the time but anyway
As overtake a get a sharp stare in those few moments where we are next to each other and he floors his car thinking ( omg a older fiesta is overtaking my fiesta drag mobile i better win this )
Humoured by this sudden change of heart probly due to him wanting to prove the length of his penis to his girl and noting that he floored his can in 5th instead of changing down a bit i calmly knocked it into 4th and put the pedal down
And Laters you lose
Signed
Fiesta 1.25 owner

But no
After he is immediatley stopped by the fact he catching up with the slower traffic he decides to spent the next two minutes ruthlessly chaseding me down in a clear patch of motorway and then while i continue at 74 ish he comes in the inside lane at about 90 and looks smug i point and laugh

What a loser lol

This is the issue here 90 percent of the uk suffers from car snobbery

Tbh the fiesta zetec s can be replaced with any number of cars i come across
A new VAG saloon with the 1.9 diesel engine

A mercedes a class

Even a exectutive type guy in a base model insignia

These people are annoying as hell and thy should all be exocuted

why not?

My main problem i have with overtaking, is i will overtake someone doing 40 in a NSL, only to be tail gated by him in a 30.

because if you overtake and dont actually make any progress you're just going to wind the driver up you've just overtaken.

Theres no point overtaking just to get one place further up the queue.

He wants to make progress in the NSL, whilst sticking to the speed limit in the 30. Sounds reasonable to me

it depends how you make progress though

that defines whether or not you get the finger. Most dont get the finger every time they overtake because they dont take EVERY overtaking oppertunity, as sometimes its jsut not worth it.

Taking each and every one "to make progress" is what makes you unpopular with other road users and gets you the finger.

What Manface is trying to say, is dont just take that overtaking oppertunity because its there and your itching to go faster.

Think about what traffic is further up the road, is this overtake actually going to get you to your destination any faster ?

If the answer is no, then dont bother overtaking.

My work place is right next to a big lorry depot. They feel the need to do 35mph on a NSL road okay and cause tailbacks for miles so on the rare day I am early to work and I see said lorries I overtake and proceed at a steady 30mph. That gets me a lot of flashes and fingers. :D

Not saying lorry drivers are bad. It's just this one company that seems to have a lot of drivers on the clock.
