I hate torrents... Any programs that can block them?

So's downloading movies, music etc via torrents. He won't even realise what's happening. Like I said I'm pretty sure he just leaves the torrents going in the background and 'forgets' about them. He'll still be able to do his downloads, this just means it I can slip a few hours of gameing or chatting with mates in evey now and again.

As far as I know what you're describing here is just a civil offence (although the laws have been changing). What you’re talking about is more likely criminal.

What you really need is a bit of cooperation and a router that supports QOS.
 
No idea what kind of router you have but if you have control over it you may be able to block his computer.

I've got a netgear and I can use the "block services" option (blocking every port for TCP/UDP) to a range or a specific IP address (such as a connected computer) on a schedule basis or simply til I turn the block off again.
 
You want to kill the torrent program while he's still using the laptop?

I thought this was just trying to get some net time while he was afk and leaving torrents on.

TBH if he's actively using the laptop at the same time you want to kill his torrents I'd say he's going to notice fairly quickly that something is wrong.

Likely to initially suspect a dodgy program is messing with the torrent program and rummage for anything suspect on the computer. At least that's what I'd do.
 
If I ever let anyone use my internet connection and then discovered that they’d abused that trust my first measure would be to completely block them from any further access.

If I discovered that someone identifiable had installed backdoor access to one of my PCs there would be serious trouble.
 
His net, his bill, his rules.

Maybe you should go research QoS and present it to him as a compromise.

He can torrent, but some QoS rules allow both your gaming, VoIP and other latency sensitive applications to get packet priority.

Not compromising for the greater good would be a dick move on his part, but at the end of the day he pays to be a dick, if he wants.

Why not ask him to limit his download times, no need to close the client and explain there is usually a scheduler that can be set up in the torrent software, if it's just a few hours out of the 24 I can't see him minding as he seems easy going letting you all use the net free of charge.
 
Gotta agree with everyone else here, if he pays the bill stop bitching, however, maybe you could convince him to limit his downloading. When I was at uni a lot of the house mates used to download all the time, so I limited myself to downloading overnight, that way I made use of the bandwidth when everyone was asleep. Come to think of it, if I'd have spent less time downloading/playing games online, I might have done better at uni
 
he pays the net bill......what do you pay for then? not sure i agree with everybody else without knowing more about the OP's situation. If the household bills are pretty evenly split (and I imagine they would be) then why should the OP's housemate have the say over the net just because he pays for that particular service? if the op pays for the electric, does that mean he has the right to turn his housemate's computer off entirely ?:p
 
One quick solution i found for lags caused by torrents is that if you limit the upload speed of the torrent program to say 50% of the max then you wont lag (cap the download to 50% while you're at it too), might be worth getting him to do that. How tech savvy is the guy? Just do it while he's not looking

BECAUSE he pays for the net he has the right to do what he likes with it surely
If i am reading the op correctly,the op does not pay for the internet access he is using so has no right to use it certainly no right to be attempting what he say he is going to do

Assuming the costs are split 50/50 between the op and his housmate, the internet bill could be just a bill that was given to the housemate to make up the numbers. Ie, op pays for rent, mate pays for council tax, op water, mate internet ect ect. The letter of the law might well say the internet is the housmates responsibility and there for it's his to do whatever he wants with, but when you are sharing a house and bill then IMO that is entirely unrealistic. If the bills arent split 50/50 then fair enough - stuck with it. But like I said, without knowing more Iwe're just guessing really. I know that in a 50/50 situation I'd be expecting fair usage of every service, net included.

Oh, I don't condone the things he is trying to do though, just to point that out lol.
