I have a simple question

As always you missed what I was saying. Most older e46's will have a list of pending tasks which the new purchaser will get lumbered with. It probably wont be fresh from a service, is more likely than not to have at least 3 brands of random tyres, might need a bit of suspension work etc.

If you said so rather than telling me now then I probably would not have replied the way I did, no.

Depends a lot on whether or not he lives with his parents or has moved out.

No, it doesnt depend on that at all. The point I was making was that it isnt a bad car for someone in his position irrespective of whether he lives in a cardboard box or a penthouse.

Ie most students would love the oppportunity to have a half decent car but cannot for many reasons take it, so he isnt exactly badly off.

I disagree, one of the main reasons I have found for a student living at their parents rent free is so they can splurge all their money on a car.

Now a student with a part time job, with no expenses, having worked through their A levels for 2 years and at least 6 months into their first year of Uni, only having saved enough to purchase an 8 year old Passat? I would not be happy with that.

On the other hand, a student who has moved out of home and is paying their own way through Uni, a nice Passat would be ace, let alone a car of any kind most students are driving.

Way to over analyse a simple point.

Most students dont have a car. Therefore most would be happy to have an 02 plate Passat instead of no car or a P reg Ford Fiesta.

It's as simple as that.

There are infinite shades of grey in life

I live with my parents, the only outgoings I have are mobile phones. I spend all my money on hifi, diesel, car audio, pc's and numerous other things, and how i make money is quite frankly nothing to do with anyone.

Spend the money on punctuation lessons ¬_¬

What? I'm just sayin'!

I thought you spent most of your income on cigarettes. Or was that someone else?

Oh and you live with your parents and go to uni? Pretty sad.

I worked from 16 during my A levels, lived at home through uni still working. I drove a 1.2 Fiat Punto through all of that. I saved all my money and student loan for a house deposit. Two years after I leave uni and I had a £30k deposit and moved out of parents. Nothing special I just didn't waste my money on rubbish.

I sometimes wish I'd lived at home through uni. Would have saved me a lot of money, however the 130 mile commute would have been a bit of a bugger :p

Nothing wrong with living with your parents, even while at uni, I lived at home when I went to Uni, I commuted there, 72 mile round trip ....much better than living in student accommodation though, I loathe noise, mess, drunkenness ...and all the crap that goes with student places.

I still live with my Mum now, I 'could' move out, but I have no need to, I have a nice room with an ensuite bathroom, I get home cooked meals and I get my washing done for me ...I do pay keep but it's a low amount compared to what it would cost me to get my own place ...I'm quite happy where I am for the time being, and I'm 26 in a couple of months. I am just saving my money up, I suppose I will put most of it into property at some point, but I don't have any specific plans. I could go and blow it all on an expensive car, but I've been there before and have no desire to do that, I am having much more fun messing around with realtively 'cheap' older luxury/executive cars, can chop and change without losing too much aswell.

Life is pretty good living at home, I get on well with my Mum though.

Which pretty much proves my point doesnt it - you've only done 9k miles yet still you've had to shell out £500 and the E36 isnt even that complex and thats with you avoiding jobs like sorting rust etc.

Well for comparisson i've spent £1100 on my 2.0 mondeo in 20K miles so i dont think he's done too badly, granted i was unluckly that my coil pack blew and my ecu needed a repair at £500.

must have been a well paid job or got an extra 10K or so deposit from parents, most part time student jobs pay about £150 a week max, you still have to pay national insurance, uniform transport costs etc.
