It was a red card. Just because he didn't break someone's leg doesn't mean it wasn't a red. He was flying through the air with both sets of studs up.
A free kick would have been harsh

here's the kicker, referees make mistakes too. Get over it.
That's not their fault, that's Fifa's.
I hate this 'ref ruined the game' line. It's bull. The refs are just there to enforce the rules, not make sure the game is 'fair' or 'good' they're there to enforce the rules of the game.
Players stop doing stupid things and breaking the rules. The ref stop 'ruining games'
No, he's not. He won't just rule out a goal for no reason.
You going to stop watching football because a player misses an open goal that could have won you a game, that in turn could have won you a cup?
I think the root of the problem lies in the organizations, it is like they WANT the game to be corrupt and unfair, if a team scored 5 perfectly good goals in a game, a ref could simply disallow them all giving a reason such as "i saw a push" or whatever, ok he might be disciplined in some way, but the game would not be replayed.
I hate the way that players get cautioned for swearing etc or complaining to the ref, you might not agree, but I think that they have every right to complain so long as referees are not getting decisions right
So what's the alternative - somebody has to be in charge to award fouls otherwise there really would be pushes before every goal!
I got a yellow card sometime last year I think, can't remember tbh, for saying ffs after a ref gave a foul against me! (obviously i didn't abbreviate it). That is just ridiculous imo.Why should referees have to put up with being sworn at in front of millions of spectators, what sort of message does that send out.... if you don't like a decision just tell the fat **** to **** off, bully the officials until they agree with you because they aren't allowed to book you for it? Ultimately the ref will think he got every decision right (at the time) so in his mind any complaint is unjustified, it's not like he's gonna stand there and think "well, I just gave a handball against Rooney and now he's called me a ****er, but it wasn't actually a handball lol, so I won't book him for dissent haha!". Players these days appeal for everything, penalties, corners, freekicks, throwins, offsides, cards for opposing players - sometimes the players are in the wrong too, not just the ref.
As I've said in another thread, it's like some refs get some sort of orgasm when giving out cards.
What most people for some reason either don't understand or choose to ignore is that according to the rules of the game right now a two footed tackle where both feet are off the floor = straight red, regardless of whether or not the ball is won.
Also, I hate the way that players get cautioned for swearing etc or complaining to the ref, you might not agree, but I think that they have every right to complain so long as referees are not getting decisions right, it is like the people who make the rules do not realize how important the games are. I have had referees caution me for a good tackle or if there is no contact before, had goals disallowed and it is incredibly frustrating!
The thing that really annoys me is the regulations which have nothing to do with football, the ref is supposed to ensure the game runs smoothly etc, it is not about him! yellow cards for complaining to the ref, showing dissent, throwing the ball away(can't they find another one?), taking your shirt off, IT IS NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL!!
So I am going to stop watching football for a while, I would obviously like some form of video assistance for referees during a game, but that is far too sensible of course. Until that happens, it just isn't football anymore![]()
It's the TV companies fault we think refs are so bad. We have all the power of replays and angles and slow-motion to arrive at what is actually the correct decision. Refs don't. And they won't, as long as they're not given the same use of technology we do.
