I do my banking online with PC -Don't use phone because wife might want to get on it if I peg out.

I started to log on and when opened the small smart card thing you put your password in it came up with battery low. - No problem - just went down list -found replace card and dialled the number. -Its auto so put in numbers then it asked for password I was given when started online/phone banking - Uh ? -What !!!.
After a few false numbers I was cut off - Sorry wrong numbers.
Found another phone number and rang that - Oh no- Indian.
Give her - her due she knew what she was doing but I was struggling to understand.
In the end it was a password I was given 45 yrs ago and I have moved three times since. - New password and I am back on the air untill keypad comes and last time I messed it up.

One of the things I noticed was when calling the robot they sent me a text with number on. Great how do I get from phone page to text page -remember number then go back to phone page only to find I am too late so start again. It was all so quick and confusing -No wonder old people won't use it. :D

This thread just reminded me that I need a new card reader.

I don't like how the banks make their websites so unappealing to use and favour mobile apps, but I suppose that's just how things are these days.

People still use these card reader/code things? I thought most banks just have you authenticate via their phone app

I went spare with Virgin when they changed their credit card to app only. You can't even login on a website anymore. So you get a long statement and want to read it whatever, and you're stuck on your phone. Their solution was to put a message on the phone app saying "If you want to read this on a bigger screen you could always download it and email it to yourself". I mean what the actual ****

I feel for you, fellow Salopian, I really do. Banking was bad enough face to face, in the branch, before they were all sold off.

Did you realise you can use any card reader, not sure if it even needs to be from the same banking corporation, but for sure with Barclays I can use anyone's card reader that has the Barclay's style one. I must test whether i can use my NatWest one with my own Barclays card. I tend to mainly choose to verify with the online app' on my `phone, although I have several card readers from the deceased or could even use the wife's if she can find hers. Nightmare though!! It doesn't seem THAT long ago I had my bank manager's personal wwork and home phone numbers. Now I haven't the faintest idea who my supposed "manager" is.

My wife just tried to register for full access on the NHS app yesterday. Supplies photo of ID and other things as requested.
Today, gets a denial response, and it just lists the same requirements as last time - no detail for why it failed or anything else.

This is easily solved, and any good UX engineer would fix it, I'm sure, but like most apps and systems these days, it's clear that those building them don't actually use them (or test them with real users).

I'm holding on to my two bank key devices until I'm no longer allowed to use them, at which point I'll likely switch completely to Starling, who have been great - at least online banks, which you don't expect to have 'real people' behind, are able to make apps that work and are designed for useful online use. (I realise this could start a commentary on problems others have had with Starling).

Hagar used the old phrase "Have a dog and bark yourself" recently. This thread brought it to mind.

All I've taken from this is that you and your wife peg?

I couldn't be dealing with a separate card reader nowadays. Just find a bnak that has an app on your phone for authentication.

I should probably give the HSBC app another try. Last time I used it, it needed my inside leg information, my nan's dogs name and the current price of a freddo each time I wanted to login (or something like that) and wouldn't allow biometrics to make it easier. Whereas Starling 'just works'.

Out of interest, which high-street banks (you know, those you can also go and speak to someone) have a decent app that is easy/quick to login to and has instant notifications for any transactions ?

I really like Starling for this, but would also like a brick-and-mortar bank that is similar if it exists.
