I lost the will to live today - Banking

Just use the app, why would you want to put yourself through that type of hassle i’ll never know.
The Barclays app is total and utter rubbish. Currently when trying to go into it it says there is a newer version that needs an update - however there is no newer version - been like that for the last 6 months. Cant actually speak to a human to sort it out.

So try the main online banking site on PC instead. This shows my account but for some reason has suddenly stopped showing individual transactions - when you click on the account you just get a "parse error" screen. Again havent yet been able to speak to a human who can sort it out.

(all this because - yes my battery has also died in the barclays card thingy.)

Utter shambles - been with them since i first started work many, many years ago.

Out of interest, which high-street banks (you know, those you can also go and speak to someone) have a decent app that is easy/quick to login to and has instant notifications for any transactions ?

I really like Starling for this, but would also like a brick-and-mortar bank that is similar if it exists.

I'm with HSBC and find their app (and instant transaction notifications) to be pretty good.

As with everything, it could be improved, but in general I can't complain about it :)

You don't actually need to sign into the app to log in, just register it and you can still use the PC method. The app does not need to be signe dinto if you just need to verify, as that part is able to be used before you sign into the app anyway. So your pone becomes the card reader thing.

Or, just replace the battery on the card reader.

Cannot fault the Halifax app. Used it for years with no hassles absolute doddle.

IIRC if you click on the preview thing and then click show more or something like that it works, just doesn't work from the direct link in the main list.

The barclays mobile app works fine, easier then logging into a computer, once set up.

You can do 99% of stuff via the mobile app, transfers, setting up additional accounts or ISAs or what have you.

Are you using an insecure/rooted/custom ROM phone or one with an old (unsupported) version of android or something? I could imagine that would play havoc with authentication.

Not sure about phone - it is 6" by3" and black on back - the front has a TV screen which shows me telephone numbers - other than that I have yet to find the hole the wind up key fits in.
And sometimes it makes funny noises. - Hang on - a video has just come on with a naked bird lifting weights.

I do my banking online with PC -Don't use phone because wife might want to get on it if I peg out.

I started to log on and when opened the small smart card thing you put your password in it came up with battery low. - No problem - just went down list -found replace card and dialled the number. -Its auto so put in numbers then it asked for password I was given when started online/phone banking - Uh ? -What !!!.
After a few false numbers I was cut off - Sorry wrong numbers.
Found another phone number and rang that - Oh no- Indian.
Give her - her due she knew what she was doing but I was struggling to understand.
In the end it was a password I was given 45 yrs ago and I have moved three times since. - New password and I am back on the air untill keypad comes and last time I messed it up.

One of the things I noticed was when calling the robot they sent me a text with number on. Great how do I get from phone page to text page -remember number then go back to phone page only to find I am too late so start again. It was all so quick and confusing -No wonder old people won't use it. :D

I was wondering what on earth you were talking about there when suddenly I twigged it - you're not with HSBC are you? Mother has or rather had one of those things like a little calculator you have to punch in some code and it comes up with something you enter in the website - never seen anything like it before or since an utter PITA

All the other places i have accounts its just a login code thing and a pin number if you want to withdraw they'll send an SMS to confirm but thats as far as it gets

What's a card reader and how is it implemented? Also, a password from 45 years ago?

My first form of banking that wasn't high street was telephone banking with A&L back in 2001. You key in a tele-PIN to authenticate.

First online banking with A&L was around 2005 which is an account number, a secret answer and a PIN to login and it's been like that ever since, except that A&L is now Santander. The app version uses biometrics to login.

This is exactly how these systems are designed, to grind you down until you just give up and leave them alone. Similar experience with UPS.
most couriers seem to hae no phone support anymore and probably all owned by the same company anyway...
capitalism did nothing but lead to a few monopolies buying up the competition and then offering sub standard products or services.

Feels like everything in the world is just getting worse and worse

It seems online banking is horses for courses. Every one to their own.

Our first bank was with Midland Bank in 1973/4 which then became HSBC who then introduced phone banking (old landline phones) so we signed up for it and were given a password/code to log in. They then introduced online banking which we still like - They were still asking for it even though we have been online banking for years.
It's a system we both get on with quite well -Use PC 24" screen so we can see it -big keyboard so we can type.
That was one of the problems I had -thick finger moments -tapping new password in and hitting wrong button because right eye has gone.
It's all sorted now but yesterday I was raging probably because simple things are now getting much harder to do. :D
