Both, your processor is dual core. One reading is for each core.

CoreTemp takes the processor temperature reading from a register within the processor that stores information from a digital sensor.

Your bios gets it's readings from a cheap and inaccurate I/O temperature sensor some where near / inside the CPU socket.

Yes but what everyone is trying to tell you is that it's not unheard of for the temp sensor to report false readings. Temps that low under load on air cooling usually indicate a false reading.

I understand. But what I'm saying is that I don't think it was that far off.

Just now the BIOS read 21c outside Windows. This utility says 24c within Windows (for the main core).

How is that such a bad motherboard reading?

Why did you quote only the top part of what I said?

I just explained why I thought it was quite accurate.

The motherboard BIOS just read 21c. Core Temp just read 24c

Of course the CPU is going to be cooler outside Windows than within. So 21 to 24 really isn't that far off.

Dude I'm not. I'm saying Core Temp is right, but the motherboard isn't that far off.

Open up the performance monitor pressing ctrl-alt-delete and you can see how much the processor is loaded. In windows the processor can be at 0% load as well you know.
