Righty o then.

I want to get away from watching TV/Pc gaming all the time. I use to play Warhammer and various other GW offerings.

However they can be a bit long winded and expensive. I would like some board games I can play with a group of friends but also some me and the Mrs can play on a rainy day

all I have at the moment is 4 different versions of monopoly (I don't know how)

What games would you suggest?
Also what games would you say are essential for a home?

I've only recently started buying board games and have already got a bit of a collection going. From what I have I would recommend you start with picking up the following:

Ticket to Ride: Europe
Super easy to learn and is good fun.
TableTop YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk8X2fn9a4I
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14996/ticket-ride-europe

Pandemic
Good co-operative game which works well with two people.
TableTop YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytK1zDPPDhw
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic

Dixit
Good game for a group of friends to play when you don't want anything too involved and just want a bit of fun.
TableTop YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6UlbxeDE0w

One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Good for a large group of people to play, is really quick and simple to play.
Sample Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4uDuH4xXLg

Generally I watch a game being played on YouTube first to get a feel for the game and get an idea of whether it would likely be something I'd like to play. I really enjoy TableTop (as you can tell fro my links above) as it gives you a good idea of the how the game works without going in to too much detail.

Definitely recommend Zombicide, great to play with almost any number of players, even solo.

Also Castle Panic, really good co-op game for both of you, and it doesn't take too long either. Wizard's Tower expansion is awesome too.

Carcassonne, another great game. Many people don't like the expansions as they say it bloats the game. Personally I think they add some great variety to it. Some can make the game more aggressive, i.e. Princess and Dragon.

Harbour if you can get your hands on a UK copy! (Which reminds me I should update my thread :p)

Camel Up - Hilarious game for 2 - 8. Fun in 2p but really does benefit from at least a 3rd player. Light betting mechanic with a great theme.

King of Tokyo - Giant monsters fighting for control of Tokyo - what's not to love? Yahtzee style dice rolling mechanic! :D

Elder Sign - good fun for 2 - 4 I would say although it supports 8! Dice rolling

Agricola - A very divisive game but I love it! Solo - 5 players. Worker placement at it's best!

Dead of Winter - in 2 player this is a strict co-op experience but in a group this becomes a tense game of backstabbing and paranoia, hard to find. Tense horror survival

Forbidden Island/Desert - Despite the the similarities in playstyle and mechanics these 2 are sufficiently different to keep you coming back for more. Some designer as Pandemic :)

Coop miniature based games, I would recommend Zombicide, DnD board games (I have legend of Drizzt but hear Castle Ravenloft is also good, seems to be mixed feelings about Wrath of ashaldaron). I have found both of these titles to be good, but mix in some other games between sessions or it gets a bit samey and meh.

For an quick and easy to learn game Forbidden Island/Deser are great little games which have a fair amount of replay value.

As recommended by Psymonkee Elder Sign is a good game, an odd mix of strategy and luck but can be very rewarding or downright punishing. This game is one of my favourites but my girlfriends least favourite.

Lords of Waterdeep is a great game, get better with 3+ players but playable with 2.

With Ticket to Ride: Europe, it's a great game but if you're more likely to play with 2-3 players some of the other maps like Switzerland may be better (or get both and enjoy :p)

I'd add Settlers of Catan, I still enjoy it as it's just a nice simple and fun game.

The Resistance for bigger groups is in a similar category to One Night Ultimate Werewolf

Hive is a great 2-player game, like a simplified version of Chess.

Love Letter is a really simple and fun mechanic that works seemingly however many people are playing.

Fury of Dracula (soon to be reprinted I hear) is a great little game though hard to get hold of.
Zombiecide good fun & fairly lite to pick up for new players.
Decent Journey into darkness (2nd Edition is best)- great little 1 vs all game set in a fantasy style world similar to DnD but in a board game (heavy to learn at first).
Imperial Assualt - Star wars version of Decent really, some slight rule differences but on the whole the same game.

Another shout for Pandemic , Ticket To Ride, and Castle Panic..

I'll also throw Machi Koro ( preferable with its expansion ) into the mix, its a great little dice / card / city building game, but amongst my non gamer or beginner gamer friends its always very popular and gets a lot of table time at the moment.

another shout for pandemic and castle panic i love castle panic lots of strategy, team work and its hard but very rewarding.(get the expansion, makes it harder adds new enemies and wizard cards).

king of new york (slightly more advanced king of tokyo, and better in my opinion)

coup or love letter very simple enjoyable quick warm up filler game.

contagion like a reverse pandemic but not as good.

betrayl at the house on the hill is a superb game massive replay value 50 scenarios,a favourite in my group.

my missus loves munchkin adventure time(i enjoy it too good little dungeon looting style game) they do muchkin in a huge range of skins.

conquest is a good game much like magic but instead u play to win worlds is simple easy to learn but harder to master and is cheap for the base game and is much cheaper than magic regarding building decks due to set expansions for each army(£12) you get 7 armies from the box that u can play like that or expand if u wish.

imperial assault excellent excellent game favourite of the groups and we cant stop wanting to play it its complex and long and takes awhile to setup but its worth it,you get campaign missions and sidequests you level your characters up after campaigns and buy items and so forth ready for the next campaign/side mission.

epic spell wars is a good fun spell casting game where u can make hundreds of combinations of spells is a good group have a laugh game(dont forget your epic wizard voice when u announce your spells!).

The essential games for two players at home are: -
7 Wonders
Dixxit
Coup
Hanabi
Pandemic
Forbidden Desert
Robinson Crusoe
Splendor

The essential games to own for more than two are the above plus:
Cards against Humanity
The Resistance: Avalon
Dead of Winter
Cosmic Encounter

I will add more when I get home

I disagree completely, CaH is great the first few times you play it but quickly gets boring once the shock factor wears off.

I play board games with the gf fairly often and can recommend the following for starters

Zombicide
Splendor
Forbidden Island
Forbidden Desert
Castle Panic + Wizards tower expansion

Don't forget the classics, too:

Chess
Checkers
Scrabble
Trivial Pursuit
Othello
Dominos
Plus a deck or two of cards and a book of different games.

Perhaps Ouija, if you're into that.

Afterward, you're into things like Cluedo, Yahtzee, Mahjong, Hnefatafl...

After playing 4 player XCom, we're going to try it 2 player. Should be interesting but I recommend it.
You can even play solo.

The point is that it is an excellent gateway game and the fun amplifies the more drunk you become. I can play Card against Humanity with the people I would NEVER EVER EVER get to sit down in front of a board game.
I can play it down the pub or at a party, at Christmas and even with total strangers.
There are next to no games that provide that level of reach and because of this I use it as a hook/gateway to teaching newbies that modern games don't have to play like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit.

My list is based on games that are awesome and that appeal to larger varieties of people.
Most people wont go near Terra Mystica, Imperial Assault, Caverna or Android:Netrunner, but these are some of the best games out there.

kaptainmarc wanted essential games and I feel that the games I recommended are modern classics because of the appeal to non geeks, appeal to both genders bias in tastes, offer a variety of game mechanics, most have decent immersion just not so much as to scare off the non geeks
  • 7 Wonders
A great card game with massive appeal to a variety of people (both male and female non geeks)
  • Dixxit
A game about using your 'left side' brain that appeals to artsy types or people who are less interested in logic, it also opens up great conversations
  • Coup
A quick travel game that has bluffing and some great moments, but it is quick to teach and easy to play, so it grabs people
  • Hanabi
A great game for flipping games on their heads, it requires communication and like coup is great for travelling, so it has the party appeal. It is teachable in just over a minute.
  • Pandemic
Just an awesome co-op game which appeals to everyone. I have even played this with my parents.
  • Forbidden Desert
A simpler version of pandemic if you like, but because if this it is easy to teach and like pandemic it is a game for people who don't like confrontation
  • Robinson Crusoe
Just an awesome game because it is co-op, has mass appeal and is HARD, so people get involved.
  • Splendor
Simple, quick to teach, but so enjoyable and even kids stand a chance of winning against adults.
  • Cards against Humanity
    As mentioned
  • The Resistance: Avalon
Bluffing, deduction and co-operation, it is a great party game and the story is so well known and non gender bias that people will not get turned off by the idea
  • Dead of Winter
I prefer it to Robinson Crusoe and zombies obviously have a larger appeal, it is basically Robinson Crusoe hardness, Pandemic appeal and has a deduction and traitor mechanic like The Resistance, so I couldn't really not recommend it.
  • Cosmic Encounter
This game has been around since 1977.... that is 38 freaking years, it is already the classic that you haven't heard of!

I could have added Caverna/Agicula or anything by Stefan Feld because they are the modern Euro, but I personally thing the above gives range of style, depth of mechanics and audience reach.

This is what I am after, me and my brother have always like "nerdy" games but convincing friends who see gaming as a bit strange to play is hard enough in this day and age

Cards against humanity will definitely get ordered I was looking at it the other day, seems like it would be a good laugh when I have people round for a **** up

Thanks for all the suggestions and taking the time to reply, Is the rain forest the best place to purchase most games mentioned here?
