I need some games in my house, what are the basics

ooo lets twist the knife with a few posters:

I don't think anyone suggested MUNCHKIN! (Yes the base game :D)

i suggested ,munchkin, i have the adventure time edition(for the missus honest!).

cards against humanity is also a excellent group drinking game its hilarious with plent of expansions to keep it fresh.

The point is that it is an excellent gateway game and the fun amplifies the more drunk you become. I can play Card against Humanity with the people I would NEVER EVER EVER get to sit down in front of a board game.
I can play it down the pub or at a party, at Christmas and even with total strangers.
There are next to no games that provide that level of reach and because of this I use it as a hook/gateway to teaching newbies that modern games don't have to play like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit.

Horses for Courses. I just found it brilliant for the first half hour to an hour then OK at best, It also requires a certain type of person to play to be any good as we found out once when a few people playing didn't know what certain things were so were just playing random cards.

While it cannot be played at the pub Id prefer to play something like Linkee.

I played card against humanity for the first time last week, up until the point I really liked the premise, I then played it and found it gave the same entertainment value as Frankie Boyle/Family Guy/Jimmy Carr combined. By that I mean random and shocking for the sake of being random and shocking.

I know that's kind of the point but it just felt like genuine funny combinations where looked over for any card that mentioned "******* into a pool of children's tears" or other such phrases. It may just be the group I was playing with but me and another guy kind of got bored of the most offensive white card winning even if it made no sense when coupled with the black card.

I don't think cards against humanity is a particularly great gateway game, something like forbidden island is better for that imo as it actually shows people that games can play differently to the traditional family board game.

Ticket to Ride: Europe
Carcassonne
Lords of Waterdeep
King of New York
Coup

Those games will get you started. However I'd really recommend watching Wil Wheatons Tabletop show on Youtube.
Then you can look up more on specific games on Dice Tower on Youtube or on the BoardGameGeek website.

The essential games for two players at home are: -
7 Wonders
Coup

What? 7 Wonders is pretty bad with two players, and I'm not even sure Coup can be played with two players.

The "essential" games for two tend to be direct confrontation games. Twilight Struggle, Commands and Colours and War of the Ring are the best ones I know of.

Oh, are we looking at two player games?

Battlelore: Second Edition. 5 Small expansions are just about to come out and bolster the game. Plus it's an excellent game with just the core set anyway.

The great thing about 7 Wonders is that it plays EXACTLY the same no matter how many players you have.

You need to remember that most people are going to find Twilight struggle a bit to much to stomach and kaptainmarc asked for 'basics' not a game that involves a six hour session like Twilight Imperium, although if you and your bro like geeking out and space ships then I recommend Twilight Imperium or Eclipse (which is essentially a light version of TI).

Coup is such a good game and I agree that it gets more interesting with a higher number of player, but it plays just as well with two AND it is cheap and easy to play.

Thanks for all the suggestions and taking the time to reply, Is the rain forest the best place to purchase most games mentioned here?

http://boardgameprices.co.uk/, but usually it is Amazon who offer the best prices due to delivery with most main sellers having presence. Keep an eye out though you can save a few quid here and there... also games retail at around £20 - £40 quid depending on popularity which causes availability to push up prices (See: Dead of Winter as an example). So it is usually best to wait for games to drop again if they are to high.
Also keep an eye on places like E-Bay though because there are a lot of second hand copies out there.

Also check out Board Game Geek for pretty much the essentials on Board gaming or watch one of Tom's top 100 videos on The Dice Tower

Munchkin needs to be set fire to.

Agreed. It's the only game I have bought out of over 40 + many expansions since I started the hobby about a year a go that I actually regret buying.

Played once and I very much doubt it'll ever get played again.

Heck, I bought Twilight Imperium 3 from the get go and still haven't managed to play it but I don't regret that purchase at all. The game looks amazing.

Not quite. If you play with a larger number of players it's not possible for cards to come back to you. This changes how you play because you have to take what appears to be the best option for you at the time rather than hope you've left enough open options for the other players not to want it.

Muz, I'm sure I could find a few people among my group who would play TI3. Also glad to hear you're going for the Munchkin: Matches and Lighter Fluid expansion, that's one game everyone should have in their collection (along with the similarly themed expansion for Cards Against Humanity). :D

I was hoping to pop along to your group this week but my friend is a bit skint. Had one too many gigs this month but he's promised we'll attend next month.

I keep telling you, drinking is not compulsory. Also you'll drink less because it's rude to go to the bar in mid-game.

We wouldn't be playing TI3 on a weekday anyway because we'd not get close to done.

I think most people enjoy Munchkin the first few times they play it. It tends to be played by people new to such games and the hideous flaws in the mechanics are only apparent after those first few fun games.

Another vote for Pandemic which is a great co-op game.

If you're into trading and negotiating then check out Bohnanza and Chinatown.

Great 2-player games for the Mrs:
- Biblios
- Jaipur
- Schotten-Totten

Fun family/group games:
- Stone Age (resource management)
- Thebes (planning and luck)
- Tobago (deduction)

It is amazing, nothing else captures the theater of it all.

Plenty of excellent suggestions, I'm going to throw in "Roll for the Galaxy". A more approachable version of Race for the Galaxy, that supports 5 players pretty well. It's not quite a quick, but it's a excellent dice game that offers a lot of interesting choices.

count yourself lucky if you can find someone to play Roll for the Galaxy with. That is a deep game, especially with 1v1. Some argue that it plays too much like solitaire but if you are both keeping tabs on each other you will find the game really intense.
