I need some help - PC freezing when playing games

To be honest, I've no idea what it means -but it says health status warning! So this could be your problem.

I see you had another thread about buying new hard drives? If you're still planning to I'd get them. Do a fresh install, and see if that solves it!

its just a warning after a perticular test, the drive sent and recieved data and it failed. part of the Cyclic redundancy check.

it might not be the problem but it is something to keep an eye on.

It's such an odd problem.

I played (and finished) mass effect 3 last night. The pc only froze three times over the whole day.

I've read that it could be my G15 keyboard that's causing the problem.

For all I know it could just be that my GFX cards are dated, or that the games I've been trying to play just don't like the GFX card.

I'm totally clueless, there's no warning, none of my hardware is over heating. At a loss.

New HDD and SSD today though. So who knows!

This. You incurred a data transfer problem. Just keep an eye on it, make sure the number does`nt increase. You could also try another data cable.

Okay thanks very much.

I just did my very first new HDD and SSD install, and whilst it was a crazy process (Man, cables cables cables) I.m gonna see if it has made any difference with gaming.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

I did, but why do you say that?

Genuinely interested to see if there's a good reason for this! I did it because Beej said so, and well, I wanted to cover one thing at a time!

I believe it is to make sure that Windows picks up that its an SSD and changes the settings accordingly :)

How is it running now?

I've not been able to play any games on it yet, but it seems to be running just fine.

SSD is very fast! :D

No doubt I'll be back here if it still crashes! :D

My gut feeling now is that it is a GFX card issue. I don't think its broken, I just think it dislikes certain games.

Well.

I booted Crysis up, put it into the recommended settings of "High" and it didnt even get past the intro. Totally crashed.

Put the settings down to Low and I could play. Hasn't crashed yet but I haven't had time to play it long enough (damn real life!).

Could this be just about the graphics card? I have read posts where people managed to get Very High settings from their Single 4850, where as I can't play the game at all with High settings in DX10.

What puts me off thinking its about the card is that I have two of them, could they both possibly be broke?

Other than that its either the processor, the MOBO or my G15 keyboard.

I have literally tried everything else :(

Just skimmed through this thread so apologies if you've already tried this but try a single graphics card in slot 2 instead of slot 1. Might be that both cards are fine but a PCI-E slot is damaged somehow.

I just tried that, and whilst it doesn't appear to to be the problem, it did help me figure out when and how games are crashing.

i have the exact same problem......
see my thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18396088

Then you will be pleased to know that I have figured out exactly how this is happening!

I just need you guys to tell me why its happening!

I just ran an auto tune test on one card in the lowest PCI slot thinking that maybe its actually the PCI slot thats broke, since I only ever put the cards in that slot to test.

Now, sadly the crash still happened but this made me realise exactly what is happening.

The auto-tune managed to get the "High Performance GPU clock settings" sorted, and plonked them at 690 MHz.

Sorted.

It then started to work through the "High Performance memory clock settings", it got to 998 then the crash occured.

So it would appear that I can now simulate the crash. If I put my settings up to full wack and hit "test custome clocks" the crash occurs. Now I hadn't been using Graphics overdrive at all, I thought that maybe it was this what was causing the crash, and turned them off. But if I turn off Graphics Overdrive can the Graphics card still go higher than 993 MHz at default settings?

So it appears the problem is the card. I just need to figure out if I can stop it going passed 993.

I think.

I just wacked High Performance memory clock settings" up to 1200 MHz on its own, did a test and it came back "failed".

I'm gonna try Crysis now witht he clocks set to lowest and manual fan control turned off.

Yep, literally just now.

Still crashed on Crysis.

So what do you think? I mean, just speculation. To me this could be that the card itself isn't getting enough power? Or maybe they are both just badly designed for games like crysis.

Its funny really, WOW, Skyrim (on max settings), space marine and a load of other games work just fine. Then theres a 5 year old game the card hates.

Sorry lots has happened in this thread. To clarify, have you tried just one card on stock speeds and it still does it?

What about trying older graphics drivers?

I think your best bet is to try and find someone close to you/a friend who you could test things with. E.g. different PSU, try your graphics cards in another PC etc...

One of the reasons I chose Crysis to try out, is that it was the first game I bought when I got the pc, and it did the same crashes then. That was with 3-4 year old drivers. Same thing.

I have tried both cards in both PCI slots and the same thing happens.

I sadly can't swap my card out for an older one since I dont have one. I am also on a university campus with no one who could lend me their PSU and no one I can convince to try my card out on.

The only think I haven't tried is playing the game with no drivers installed.

Do you think it is worth buying a new card Beej? I need one anyway I suppose.

Not at Birmingham Uni by any chance?! Shot in the dark I suppose...

Hmm, I can understand why this is frustrating :(

Based on the tests you've done I wouldn't get a new GPU at this stage.

Woah woah woah.

As a shot in the dark, I just tested the BIOS on the card, and from what I can tell, its like, a mega old BIOS.

I thought I'd updated that.

Would this be the cause of the crashes you think?

EDIT: And no, Lancaster :(
