My dads buying it so to me it is free:)

Tbh you can do a lot worse for a first car, without my dad it would be a lot worse

Thats no reason to buy one, thats like saying 'I bought an FSO Polenez becuase somebody else paid and its better than walking in the rain'.

Whoever is paying, you have the opportunity to get a decent car you'll enjoy owning - or you could get a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2.

You want a Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, perhaps a Seat Ibiza or maybe a Skoda Fabia. You do not want a Vauxhall Corsa unless all of the following criteria are met:

a) You are running from a deranged serial killer
b) A man stops you and offers you a Corsa for £5
c) You are thus able to escape.

If those 3 don't apply, buy something else! You say you can do a lot worse - as far as nearly new Supermini's go, I am struggling for ways you can do worse than a Corsa that don't involve Perodua..

Infact if your primary concern is something that looks 'cute' then allow me to shock the forum and suggest you take a look at..

... the new model Fiat Punto. It's shaping up to be a pretty decent Supermini.

Nothing you say shocks me Fox. :p - Correction, you did'nt tell her to buy a Mondeo! I'm shocked! :D

Congratulations Tinkerbell, well done mate.

Keep clear of trucks, you won't go far wrong. ;)

A Mondeo would be a pretty daft recommendation becuase there is more chance of me thinking 'Hmm yes, perhaps a 1996 BMW 316i is the car for me' than Tinkerbell popping home with a low mileage Mondeo GLX, so I thought it would be helpful to at least recommend stuff she'd actually want.

Keep clear of trucks, and Corsas. People who think they are cute are... KEEPING VAUXHALL SELLING THEM :( Well, them and BSM who bought something like 60% of Corsa production last year and im not joking :(

Ah yes, I forgot about the 'dont have an opinion' thing on here lately. Better to just shut up and smile rather than give somebody an opinion BEFORE they spend £5000 on something that isnt THAT great, but clearly my logic is flawed.

In what way would a Corsa be 'perfect' that.. any other Supermini wouldn't be even more perfect? Would it not be better to have the build quality of a Polo, or the reliability of a Yaris? No.... just buy a Corsa that has neither I guess.

Much apologies, enjoy your Corsa, I'm sure it'll be a brilliant car.

Erm, I'd have thought you'd have spotted the irony there, oh well.

You take yourself FAR too seriously Mr Fox. :p :D

I actually agree with Fox on this one. I might not have loads of driving experience (compared to many people here) or a great understanding of cars, but I know that for £5k you can get a lot better than a 1.2 Corsa.

I drove one for my test/lessons and it wasn't pretty looking (i suppose that is down to personal preference) nor did it drive well - I got bored quite quickly in lessons as there was just no....excitement. They are a very popular car because vauxhall has marketed them so that they appeal to certain groups people for all the wrong reasons.

At the end of the day, its your choice and if you want a corsa, then by all means get a corsa. Since you've just passed your test, its a car and you will enjoy driving it...for a while.

However, I think you would do well to take into consideration some of the points made before you go ahead with it.

Just my $0.02

At the end of the day, what anyone says here is unlikely to make any difference tinkerbell, so if your happy go for it. No matter what car you have for your first car you will get bored. I know whats its like to have your heart set on a car that clearly isnt THE best option, but who cares :)

Well done, it's a great feeling passing your test and soon you will wonder what you did before you passed to get around - however please take note of the following information:

Do not under any circumstances buy a 1.2 corsa.

:)

Congrats :)
And dont' mind Fox, he's got an extreme hatred of Corsas :p If you're happy with the car then so be it, I know I would be if someone else was paying for it :D

As much as we all love to hate fox he does have very good knowledge on things like this, there is a reason he hates corsas. I just cannot see why anyone would go for one when there is nothing it is class leading in. It's not the cheapest, it's not the best looking, it's not the fastest, it's not the best built, it's not the best to drive, it's not the most reliable.....so why choose it? All its competition do pretty much everything better, so why waste your dads money, and your time as it'll be you that has to drive it (at tinkerbell).

Well done on passing though btw :)

Tom.

She's only happy with it becuase, with respect, she knows no better. It's like me buying a digital camera - I know nothing about them so if I'd picked a new camera to buy based purely on how nice it looks it would be utterly pointless the people in the photography forum saying useless cack like 'OMG if you are happy with it, buy it'. I'd only be happy with it becuase I know no better - if those guys can offer advice on something better I'd be daft to dismiss it out of hand.

I once had a Sega Master system and thought it was awesome. Was it? No, it was junk, I only thought it was awesome becuase I didn't really know any better and once I found out that I'd spent my hard earned pocket money on quite possibly the worst games console on the market I was uber miffed :p

Same applies here.

I do hate Corsas but only becuase virtually everything else is noticeably better in many ways. I don't hate them for a laugh, or for no reason at all. Ok the only one I've tried was the 1.3 CTDi but damn, that was more than enough Corsa C for me.
