Ok so I'm new to playing FPS online so I guess I'm having trouble adjusting to REAL targets, and I did only get UT3 yesterday. But I'm really having trouble trying to hit people
The game moves so fast before I know it I've got a rocket up my ****!
And why does everyone jump around all the time surely thats cheating?
Anyone got any tips? And don't say jump around all the time :D

Just practice really....jumping is not cheating. These sort of fast paced FPS games require that you are constantly moving. I am always dodging, jumping, crouching, jumpkicking off walls....just do all that while trying to keep good aim and predict where the target will be once the rocket or whatever reaches that spot.

Just think super jedi ninja squirrelmaster on crack

Yeh, off all the online games to start off with, the UT3 games are up there with the hardest. The game is designed to be played while jumping round, its not cheating by any means. Just keep practising. Stick the bots up to the hardest difficulty and see how well you do, however this is by no means a good representation. People are much more random than bots. And whatever you do, don't complain everytime you die when you start off.

I'd say im a pretty seasoned CSS player with good reflexes and aim, and even then I find UT3 quite difficult at times because the game is a heck of a lot faster and people are able to move in all directions more freely (unlike in CSS). So I can imagine it would be a lot harder for you to get into UT3.

I guess the tips would be to keep moving around fast by jumping, dodging (the double key tap), jumping off walls, and pretty much move in any way possible so that they can't keep their gun trained on you. As for aim wise, as with any FPS game, I guess it is practice, and finding the right mouse sensitivity for you

K, just had a few hours practice and I'm getting a little bit better. Came 8th out of 12 and got a multi kill to boot!
Have to say my fave weapon is the rocket launcher (cos u can't really miss :p) But I like the flak cannon and stinger assault gun too.
One question though..... How do you unlock stuff?

What i tell my mates when they first play FPS is:

Don't stay still

The rest will follow :)

You won't get good at UT without playing it for hours and hours and hours.

You'll first need to get used to the dynamics of using different types of weapons, hit scan weapons for example (Shock, Sniper) require much more accurate aim especially at distance and will make you sway towards lower mouse sensitivities and less movement, where as spam weapons like flak and rox are more for close combat and you'll want a higher sensitivity for these situations utilising more movement with a more random pattern to avoid spam from everyone else.

It's all about finding a balance point (personally I have a high sensitivity because over time I've gotten better at mouse control and so can aim with it at range, thus making it good for every situation). Initially you prolly won't be able to do this, start with a lower one so you can aim the hitscan weapons better (The hardest ones to get used to), but if you start getting frustrated with not being able to turn quick enough when someone is dodging round you, push your sensitivity up a bit and keep going like that

Map tactics are important too, most importantly time the important pickups.... shield belt and damage amp if they're turned on, along with decent ammo spawns (Ammo i find is much more important in UT3 than older UT games, it seems to run out a lot quicker).

That's barely scratching the surface and only touching on DM, there is A LOT to learn and get good at, to be good at just one game mode, let alone more than one.

I play for a team that managed to hit the top in UT2004 ONS and then was fast climbing the ladder in TDM with A LOT of hours clocked up, so can help you out if you need any advice.

To unlock the characters you can either complete the campaign, or type "unlockallchars" in console (F10).

Btw if you are new to FPS's I'm not sure UT is a good place to start like someone else said. You could try CSS - it's very basic, or if you want a newer FPS, try CoD4.

Threshold I advise against playing bots. Playing online may get you a bit discouraged but playing against real people is the only way you'll really improve.

1: Never stand still
2: Know your weapons!! (long range, short range etc)
3: Learn where the Health pickups are
4: Know where people run to and anticipate their moves (i.e: Spam a corner :p)
5: Know the maps

^^Rinse and repeat the above many many times ;)

I find UT3 quite hard but I find CSS a lot harder, I'm next to useless on that!.

I bought UT3 on friday and dont really like it. I don't find it very satisfying to shoot and kill opponents. The movement is dynamic and quick which is great. COD4 has awful movement, feels liek your moving in quick sand.

On balance CSS is still king.

I'm going to give UT£ another try though because too many fps are war/military based and theres not enough scifi shooters.

btw, which is the ut3 game? deathmatch, td,..?
