So he claims. You've got no way of knowing if he's just full of it or not.

I have absoutely no reason to doubt him, I've sat in the same office as him for 8 months. He earn 100k+ a year and the credit limits are not beyond the realms of possibility...

Im in the same situation really, i have to do a bank transfer to my parents account if i want to order anything online as i only have a cash card and a cheque book.

i would love to order my own things but i have been told that credit cards/debit cards are not worth it at my age (18).

i would like a card that wont let me go below what i dont have, anyone have a suggestion?

WHAT? Nothing wrong with a debit card mate, you can only spend what you have (unless you have an overdraft)

I was living on my own at 18 and would have been screwed without a debit card.

On the other hand I completely regret having a credit card. Although I have a lot of cool stuff to show for it :)

If his credit limits are 43% higher than he earns then I guess it is possible, when my credit limits were recently about 300% higher than I earn. I have cancelled two of my cards from the same provider recently because I never used them.

Just been talking to a guy here about this thread, as he's always on about the credit cards he has, and he jumps from one to another to take advantage of 0% rates. He just showed me the stash of them he has in his wallet. Hiss total credit limits for all of them is................................

£143,000 WTF

I have about £40k in my wallet :p

I'm a card tart :(

No it wouldn't. You buy on a credit card and you get increased consumer protection, you can benefit from cashback deals, you get insurance, you increase your credit rating.

Credit cards are not just to help you buy things you dont actually have the money for.

This is the reason i want to get a credit card. :)

I've taken a look around on Moneysupermarket and i do have a better understanding about what to look out for - such as low interest rates etc. I will rarely use the card but as i said in the OP, it will be for emergencies.

Now to find a card i like the look of...and by that i mean, appearance. :o :p

Didn't realise this would be such a popular thread. :)

Well in all fairness for me a credit card only offers me ease of payement and additional protection.

Personally i dont beleive in Interest so at the end of every month i always pay my balance in full.

So really for me going on it for looks aint so bad.

In addition the black card offers you - Worldwide Travel insurance for you and your family, European Breakdown Cover, Free Airline Lounge, and some other cool perks, like a concierge etc.... It has a £250 annual fee tho...

But for me that fee is justified, as i travel abroad on pretty much a weekly basis so the travel insurance would cost me in the region of £170, and the breakdown cover covers the rest.

But hey the buggers wont give me one so that that!!!!

The best place for a credit card is probably to start with your own bank. I have a Visa and I just signed up for an Amazon Mastercard to get £15 discount :p . I only ever use a credit card for big purchases and I pay the balance in full at the end of the month. I also wanted to start to build a credit rating up for myself.

If you're not stupid with money and know what you do and don't have you'll be fine with one and it's always nice to know that you have the option there to use it if you need to.

Edit: Visa Electron is useless, I have one and used to have lots of trouble ordering online with it, most places called me up to say they couldn't verify the transaction and so I had to use another method. Visa Debit is fantastic though, I use this the most.

Credit cards are vicious little buggers I wish I'd never clapped eyes on the things.
So much goes on the cards now that it leaves little left to "have fun with" so the fun items .. go on the credit card. LOL
Good job I can juggle the system well enough to keep "most" of them on 0%
33 now, been doing that since I was about 20 and am sick to the back teeth of the things.
Money at work is good (enough) so I have a plan to get out of this mess in a year or so.

Mind you, I do have all the best toys, at the end of the day though it's all materialistic clutter anyway, you can't take it with you....

Can't take debt with you either though :D

But they might lump it on to my penniless brother who's never even had a bank account in his life (until recently) lol

A credit card is a credit card if your sensible. If your buying over the net a CC is safer and gives you a lot more come back than say using a debit card if something goes wrong. If you can pay off what you buy when the bill comes then it doesn't matter what the apr. Just make sure you don't get yourself in to debt or what not.

Whats the annual fee in the UK for the Green Amex Card? Its around $95 in the US but couldnt find it in the UK.

Its £37.50 but as the OP is after a credit card it'd be best to direct him towards the AMEX Red (or any of the other CC's they do)
