I want to learn guitar

Had a word with a tutor that can come to me, its usually 15 per hour but i got him to do £10 for first lesson to see if i like it.

I duno if theirs any cheaper out there, i know there's somewhere else tho but its hard to get to. As i have issues going out the flat so someone coming to me is great but the cost of lessons would kill me as i dont work.

I think I've attempted two or three times to play/learn guitar. My brother picked it up immediately and now plays guitar, drums..does stage performances...sings...talented so and so.

I'm pretty sure every man on the planet wishes he could play the guitar (if they already can't) as it's a pretty stereotypical 'cool' thing to do.

That and being a government spy. :p

I just missed out by a quid on a roland micro cube which needs a power lead but thats like 8 quid. I bidded up to 15 quid (bidded a few times) and stoped at 15 but email saying it was sold for 16 quid pees me off cos its worth 50+ usually and it was semi local i could have got a lift to pick it up too. Saw video of it and yeah its 2w rated but sounded mint especially the accoustic effect.

:(

Ah well.

I use a Fender Frontman 15G practice amp, does the job for what I need it for. Noticed there are a few on the Bay but no idea how close they would be to you for collection.

With regards to tuition, I wouldn't recommend seeing a tutor until you have the basics under your belt. There's little point (in my opinion) in paying a tutor to teach you basic chord shapes. There is a wealth of resource on the web for this kind of thing, including music theory (again, I personally would avoid it as a beginner)

When you start actually playing some songs, then maybe see a tutor to help you with your technique.

After watching the roland micro amp do a really good acoustic sound i really would like a amp that can do that whilst being cheap but good. Id probs be up for spending 20 quid on a amp.

Does the fender 15g whilst being under i hope 25 delivered, do acoustic emulation?

Skeeter, if you want I've got an electric guitar you can have. Might need the strings replacing, but it comes with an amp, soft case, lead & a book or two, and I think I've got a pack of strings lying about somewhere too. All you've got to do is figure out a way to get it to you from Est Kent and pay for the delivery, and the lot's yours. Trust me if you're interested. No strings attached.*

*Well, strings attached, but like I said, they might need replacing. Hasn't been tuned in 2 years or so.

Tried emailing u through trust but no reply and ur not on msn so ill ask again here.

If this offer is still available can i take it for my niece. Just find out how much postage it would be and some pics of it u can either post here on email me through trust them or get me on msn. Sister wants a elect guitar for 9yr niece and think it might be good for her for xmas. So time is of the essence.

Can someone let me know which electronic tuner/metronome to get. Heard of the Korg tm-40 but its a bit expensive ideally nothing over £10 delivered.

I use a tuner i got form Argos ages ago ... dose the job.

Ive also got a few apps on my phone for tuning and metronome.

I wish my lessons were £15 an hour! I pay £25 for 40 minutes! :o He is a very accomplished musician though and experienced teacher so that is a lot of the cost I suspect. I'd be very surprised if you got cheaper than £15 per hour. In fact I would be wary of any lessons costing that much at all. However it wouldn't hurt to give them a go and see how it goes.

In my opinion I would say get a tutor ASAP. Not unless you are going to start with pure theory, you need good technique as soon you pick up a guitar. There are 'correct' ways of holding a guitar, doing things like holding the plectrum and plucking strings which you want to get right as soon as possible. You will struggle to get these types of things right with self tuition alone.

This probably doesn't apply to everyone, but I find having a good tutor helps with motivation as well. I started self teaching a good few years ago but gave up after a few months, because I felt what I was teaching myself was lacking direction and focus. And before someone says I was using justinguitar mostly. :p I left guitar for a few years and only recently picked it up again. I can't imagine how good I would be now if I would have kept playing since I bought my guitar!

Guitar arrived this today. Was worried cos the tracking of the thing was a nightmare. But its come and not broke so. :)

Might be poping to town with bro to some music shops to see about some picks an electronic tuner and maybe an amp depends if their owt i like that is reasonably priced.

Here are some pics. Incase anyone would like to see it.

Edit - bah, im tring this D chord tutorial vid http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-111-D-chord.php and my damn fingers are too fat on the tips causing the 1st string (thinnest) to not work i.e my 3rd finger is touching the 1st string when it shouldnt, i cant seem to find away around it. Any advice oh and my fingers have fat lines groved in after just 2 mins haha.

Edit 2 - Damn it hurts, my tips are too soft and squishy the strings get really into my tips.

Edit 3 - Hmm got the D cord a few times now, gona take awhile till i can do it off by heart tho. More finger pain tho. grr..

Your fingers tips are still soft, and so squidge down around the strings. Eventually, and with a fair bit of pain :D, you will develop calluses, along with more accuracy. Stick it out - I started learning 2 years ago (in my 40's) and I'm glad I did.

I was in the same boat as i bet we all have been but it does get easier, just keep practicing, wait until you try an F chord or a G7 .... its like doing the splits with your fingers :)

just bumping this, turns out my dad is getting me a guitar/amp for christmas :p ive never played before but have always been interested. I'd rather teach myself tbh, im wondering where i should look for that?

thanks

Try to get ur dad to get a non cheap one as i have been reading ppl cant learn on cheap ones like starter packs or somit thats why i was realy insistant with myself on getting the yamaha pacifica due to ppl saying all over the net that its probs one of the best guitars to learn with.

I mean i got a nice pacifica 012 for 55 delivered so it is possible to get it cheap on the net for a good quality one.

Now ok i never tried a cheap one but tbh i didnt wana risk spending my time learning on somit that would be harder to learn with.

Im trying justinguitar site to learn with so far i can do a D and A cord but hurts like hell and i really have to struggle by lookin at the placements all the time and lookin at strings to strum and it takes a few strums to get it right. But seems like a good site which he takes u through it step by step and slowly. Its free too and all in video which i like as i dont think i could learn by reading this stuff.

It is getting a little easier to do D chord, A is still a bit awkard due to the width of my fingers but doable sometimes.

I still have to look and crouch over a lot to see what im doing and i have to look at what im strumming otherwise i cant do the right ones. Hope it gets easier and can do it without lookin someday in the future but way im doing it atm i cant see that happening soon lol.

The GH3 strap is working fine for now.

Im using a .50 or somit pick atm, as the shop didnt have .38 as justin says to use. And i find the strumming is very noisy when strumming and i cant do strum up very well yet.

Oh and the 6th string, it kinda buzzes on some of the frets if i do it on its own (vibrates a lot which means it touches some frets i mean on occasion), i duno if thats normal. String seems in tune and it feels slacker than the others which i duno if i need to fix or not.

I went and ordered the korg ca-1 tuner since no one wanted to care to tell me what they had or the cheapest but accurate enough ones (cept someone but didnt say which). So hope its worth £9 delivered off of ebay. Theirs a online metronome so im not gona get a dedicated offline one just yet.

@PZR i duno, seems like a cheap one to me. I can only say from what i wanted which was a yamaha pacifica due to reputation as the best budget starter guitar so i avoided all others tho thought about a fender squire which i think ppl recommend but isnt up to the pacifica quality or so i hear. Get a good one, used ones are fine, this one i have is ok and got it £55 delivered which ok didnt come with an amp but at least i can practice with it till i get one and one that id actually like to pick myself instead of one that comes with a pack as im guessing will be basic of the basic. From what i understand. Cheaper ones will go out of tune more, be harder to play due to neck i think and wont have a good sustain and probs wont sound as good. But that is due to what i have looked at and what others say. I mean if it was good to learn with id probs have got it. I dont have it so..
