Hi,

I've finally got my chip stable at 4.5 with reasonable voltages (1.315v), however the temps seem rather high to me, peaking at 83°C with an ambient temp of only 16°C and I've even taken the side of the case off.

Do you think I need to reset the cooler? I thought I did a good job or is there something wrong with my settings? Before I changed the turbo boost limt to 250 & 200 I couldnt get stable for more than 5 runs of intelburn but temps never went above 73°C

Suggestions most welcome

Running a similar setup.
CM 690II 14cm fans
Asrock Ex4 Gen3
I5 at 4.4GHz (4.5 unstable)
Thermaltake Venous X 2x14cm (1200rpm fan)
6950 Toxic (Xfire Soon)

Mine is auto volts ATM. Prime stable at 60C Core 1+2 (3+4 52C)
I'll upload pictures when home.

But your system runs HOT.
I advise a new CPU cooler, perhaps upgrading the case cooling.
Re-applying the Tim, but cleaning the CPU + Cooler before reseating with Tim remover.
Alternatively lower your OC, but you'll probably find games don't max out the 4 cores at 4.5. They don't on mine, so the system runs cooler even with BF3.

Motherboard, CPU + GPU.
But things change from there, I'd say thing a very hot

Yeah it is hot. Ill try to reset the cooler. It shouldnt be a problem with the case cooling as I have the side panel off and the ambient temp is only 16°C.

Can you use white spirit or nail polish remover instead? I dont have any Tim remover to hand

Yes you can but it's not ideal, as both will leave a residue on the CPU an cooling block, that will reduce cooling efficiency by 5% roughly.
- I used White spirit last week, as I had to split my system. I will be buying Tim cleaner soon, an reset the cooler.
Again good thermal paste is important, not sure what you are using.

As for your case!
Have you all the cables routed out of the way of primary air flow?
An I strongly advise against, running with the side panel off.
All those dust bunnies.

Fortunately that 83C is only with intel burn an prime95. So under normal use an gaming it won't hit those temps.
Because 83C is not healthy for SandyBridge.
I think 95 is your themal limit, an then hardware nirvana.

.

I'm just using the standard stuff you get with the cooler - The multi-award winning high performance GC-2 thermal compound. I have just found some old compound I had left over from a Noctua cooler. Do you think this would be better? It is 4.5yrs old Also what method you you use to apply the stuff?

The side is only off atm until I get my new fans installed the standard one with my case move next to no air.

What cooler are you using?

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler

Try these settings, that's how I run mine 24/7 and it's pretty cool.

I get BSOD after 30 secs of Intelburn and the temps were heading the same way.

Sounds like you definitely need to re-apply thermal paste and re-seat the cpu cooler.

This board is fantastic at auto clocking. Don't touch any of the other settings apart from the manual cpu speed to 45 or 46 (the multiplier) leave the rest alone.

Well I've reset my cooler using the pea method to applythe paste (putting a pea sized blob of paste in the middle of the cpu and then putting the cooler on it) and it's made no difference. There looked to be nothing wrong with the original setting to me. A nice even thin spread :(

(clicky)

Looks worse if anything.

I dont get this I've added coolers to cpus and gpus before with no problems. Guess ill try the credit card method next

edit: sorry read on after my panic there...

Can you take an actual pic of your rig / heatsink fan.

A few pics..

My rig

What the Heatsink and cpu looked like after trying the pea method

Third attempt using the credit card method, found it quite hard with the MB in the case

Putting the HS back in

I am really bamboozled, I really cant see where I am going wrong, guess I'll have to keep it at stock until I buy another cooler to try

Can anyone see anything obvious?

all looks fine to me, maybe someone else can help. The only thing that it might be is the thermal paste is spread on to thick. But that seems the same amount as myn and I don't have those kind of temps... Maybe an RMA on the cooler?

Yeah I guess it is too much paste, cant see it making mre than a couple of degrees difference thou

Guess I'll try returning the cooler, I cant see what can go wrong with a cooler however

Whats the crack with RMA? Webnote etc want a RMA number or do just leave that blank?

at 4GHz I was getting 73°C with the Gelid 83°C with the stock cooler. That seems hot even for the stock cooler

That is very very strange... Try not overclocking and what are your temps? I'm on 35c for cpu on 4.5ghz when I first boot up... You havn't got too many volts going in to the cpu have you?
