i7 4790k to Ryzen 1800x, worth it?

ok thanks, time to google step by step instructions on how to OC!!!

It's really pretty easy. Just make sure you don't set the vcore too high and your temps don't get too toasty. Don't be tempted to use the auto overclock option some boards have. It nearly always sets the vcore too high.

I went from a 4970k to a 6800k and noticed no difference at all in games. I am using a X34 3440 x 1440 display with a 980Ti.

IMO your graphical settings would be more gpu related than cpu, spend the money on a faster gpu.

thanks for the comments guys, from what you all say it might be best I upgrade my GPU rather than cpu, ram and mobo. Possibly to a 1080 Ti which if rumours are true could possibly come to same price as mentioned parts.

Definitely, I'm planning on moving from a 4790k to an 1800X but I'm replacing my Fury with a Vega card first then I'll look at doing the cpu upgrade. I'm at 3440x1440 so not 4k but my cpu seems to handle gaming without an issue so there's no rush.
The 4790k was Intels first 4ghz cpu and it was a Haswell Refresh that released practically along side Broadwell which did not have anything faster so it's only really one gen behind the Skylake and Skylake refresh they call Kabylake.
It's still a cracking cpu that has a lot of years left in the tank.

I'm the same, clueless about overclocking, I just went into the bios and put the core multiplier to 45 so now it runs at 4.5, I tried 46 but it would crash every now and then so I dropped it back to 45 and it's never had a problem, I'm sure if I could do it all properly there's a bit more to be had but I don't really need it for gaming.

I would do it - here are a couple of reasons

DDR 4
8 CORES
esentially similar IPC ( possibly better)
potential upgrade path to AM4+
lower tdp

Zen is going to shake up pricing in the used market, it's a good time to sell whilst your hardware still has value, Ryzen 6 cores + quads havent arived. best to sell and add a few dollars to have a system ready for atleast the next 4 years.

It depends what you use your PC for, games will probably be the same if not worse but with productivity apps you'll see nearly a two-fold increase.

ive decided to go down the OC route on my i7 4790k and possibly get a gtx1080Ti depending on preview coming soon.

I mainly game, I also twitch stream.

Sensible brain would say: I guess this is where 8 cores comes in handy. However the CPU is performing ok and not dropping frames etc. then you should stick with what you have until it's not sufficient any longer.
Impulsive brain would say: Everyone likes new shiny.

I want to thank you all for your comments, its appreciated. So what I have decided to do is overclock my 4790k. I have just purchased a corsair h100i v2 AIO cooler to help with the OC'ing. I will then see how it goes and maybe upgrade my 980ti to a 1080ti shortly after release. I just need to research or ask someones kind help on how to OC my 4790k. With installing hardware I'm very confident and capable, but with software/OC'ing I'm clueless.

Plenty of overclocking experts on here will be happy to help I'm sure :)

I have my 6700k clocked to 4.6ghz with little effort so i can give a little advice if needed.

Check out the 4790k overclocking thread :)

I would start by setting your

clock multiplier (46) 4.6ghz
Vcore to 1.25v
Uncore multiplier to 40
Input voltage to 1.75 (don't confuse this with vcore!!)

And see if it's stable and play with settings from there)

many thanks. My AIO is arriving today so tonights task for me is to install that, then hopefully this weekend have an attempt at OC. Expect to see a lot of m ehere asking questions then!!

I too am thinking about upgrading my aging 4770k to a 1700/1700x/1800x (depending on how well each of these overclock, as I really want something that at least matches my current 4.5 Ghz clock in every scenario). Not sure I need it though and it's not like games or apps would be running slow, but having 8 cores would probably be awesome for many years to come. And it's not like the upgrade would even be that expensive after selling my current components (350-500€ for the upgrade depending on the components I pick).
