i7 5820K upgrade to i7 14700K or wait?

Cheers just ordered a Thermalright frame. When I take the cooler off to fit it, will be interesting to see how the paste spread out, I only did a small pea size in the middle but might do a bit more in a X pattern this time.

Just to say the Thermalright LGA1700 frame arrived already today!! so put it in this evening and re-seated the Dark Rock Pro 5 cooler with a bit more paste (TF7 that came with frame). Quick testing shows idle temps down by about 5degC and on Cinebench R23 about 15degC cooler - now only hitting 85degC on hottest core. Well happy with that!!

Cheers for the heads up @MartinPrince @Emlyn_Dewar :-)

Ended up getting Z790 Riptide WiFi, 14900k and a new NVME drive. All installed pretty nicely and got up and running on fresh Windows install... after downloading WiFi drivers to a USB stick.

Happy with the performance increase, certainly my Photoshop actions and video editing are noticeably faster. I've ready all about it but yeh the CPU is challenge to keep cool - 100degC!!!
Yikes, 100C is pretty mental.

I went from 5820k to a 7900 (non-x) a few months back, which has been an excellent upgrade. Tbh more productivity than gaming these days, but either way it's enough grunt to keep me going for many years.

Yeh - seems weird being happy with "only" 85degC lol. But seems to be the way with these latest Intel chips.

Nice - 5820k served you well too then, think I had mine for nearly 10 years lol! Still will also be staying for 5+ years minimum, no desire chasing marginal gains

About 9 years, got my 5820k in 2015. Paid €330.

Taken this long to deliver double the stock IPC, double the cores, and double the power efficiently, for about the same price.

Of course it was a lot better than stock, mine ran at 4.2 no probs.

Oops, sorry missed these replies. I ended up buying more new bits than I planned. I thought I might as well get a new PSU since mine was over 10 years old and it would allow me to benchmark my new setup for a while before switching over to it. That was handy since my old PSU died one week after buying the new one!

When the new Arctic Liquid Freezer III AIOs came out, they were a very good price so I got a 420mm one of them thinking I could make it fit my old Corsair case. When it came down to it, I got lazy and decided to splash out on a Lian Li 011D Evo RGB case. I'm glad I did as it was such an easy and neat build. My PC is on the floor though, so I hate the bottom mounted front I/O panel.

After fitting a few cheap second hand fans and altering the stupid default power settings on the motherboard, I've got reasonable temps now. they should improve when I get around to adding 4 more fans to the case. Stability is rock steady but there's not a noticeable difference in speed for general browsing and office duties. I've not done any video editing yet but exporting video from my CCTV setup (Blue Iris) is massively quicker.
