i7 930

If you notice OCUK have stopped stocking OEM 920s, and the Retail 920s are going quite cheap :)

they wer cheap last week as they wer on offer reduced from ~£210 to £205.99, but now theyve been ramped right up to £220.99 :o glad i ordered last week :D

This i7-930 seems to be doing OK:

Pfft, no HT = fail, I don't think these chips will be any better than the current 920's for clocking, I was kinda hoping that they were gonna release the 930's on their 32nm node, as that would have made it more appealing to myself anyway, I'd probably have sold my 920 and got one of these if they were a 32nm part...

Pfft, no HT = fail,
LOL, I'm new to the OC'ing scene, I just see the voltage and the core speed and think "Hmmm... that looks OK". :D Thanks for bringing that up.

That seems to be the general consensus. If you have a 920 there's absolutely no point in getting a 930. For prospective i7-9XX buyers, the 930 may be worth the extra £20-£30 if you see an extra ~100MHz as being worth it.

For me anyway (as it will be my first OC'd system) I'm worried that if I don't get the 930, it might be the difference between getting a 4.0GHz stable system or not. I'm sure with experience (and knowledge) I'll be able to safely go past the 4GHz mark, but for the moment I'd like that little extra help! :)

did you see the jpg i attached a few posts above yours? thats got HT on and was running at 4.6 on air (albeit not stable -but water cooling will sort that out) the chip is stable at 4.4 on air -best ive seen for the 920 is 4.2 on air. granted the 200mhz probably wont be noticable, but its still that little bit more for the enthusiast.

im in the market for an i7, so will probably wait for the 930 now to ensure that ive got the best chances of hitting the 4ghz mark myself.

Half way through building my i7 rig and glad I held off on buying my 920 now, especially if the 930's are so easy to reach 4.0ghz stable on air. I just hope they are priced the same or at least the 920's get a decent price drop.

And your point is?

Here is a screen of my 920.

And the CPUZ validation for that clock:

This wasn't 24/7 stable, but I did manage to run some benches at 4.7GHz, it was on air though, so I didn't want to try running LinX or Prime as it would have gotten to hot.

I do have 4.4GHz stable profiles though for my chip though.

There really isn't going to be much difference between these and a current 920 imo, I doubt they will be any better for clocking neither.

As i said, i'd only seen the 920 at 4.2 on air before now, so thought that getting the 930 at 4.4 was something worth noting. obviously i've been proved wrong, which leads me to the questions.. what the heck is the point in the 930 chip if its the same 45nm and cant overclock any better? Surely anyone buying a 920/30 buys it to overclock anyway, and those that just use a chip at stock speed and have more money that sense would buy a 975.

not necessarily, I'm thinking of buying a 920/930 but I ain't overclocking it. I just want a decent i7 at a decent price.

what makes me sad is why the hell dont intel just release cpu's at 4ghz? they can do it and will last ages, its safe and they already have new coolers for the gulftown range.

just think retail core i7 @ 4.00 and thats it goodnight AMD until 2011 at best.

instead they limit them so they can charge more for the damm extreme range ah u gotta love capatalism >:|

i wont shed too many tears though as we get it pretty good taking those sub £100 chips that come along every few years beyond anything they have available for retail :D
