Ice Bucket Challenge

I've been nominated by my sister, but I'll be damned if I'm going to do it. Can I just make a donation, or will the whole system fall down?

If you don't do it you're meant to donate $100 so around £60.

I ignored my nomination I donate enough as it is.

So just found out only 27% of the money raised goes towards research into a cure.

So wheres the rest of the money going? Whos pockets are being lined here?

Here are the salaries for the leadership of the group

Jane H. Gilbert – President and CEO – $339,475.00
Daniel M. Reznikov – Chief Financial Officer – $201,260.00
Steve Gibson – Chief Public Policy Officer – $182,862.00
Kimberly Maginnis - Chief of Care Services Officer – $160,646.00
Lance Slaughter - Chief Chapter Relations and Development Officer – $152,692.00

Michelle Keegan – Chief Development Officer – $178,744.00
John Applegate – Association Finance Officer – $118.726.00
David Moses – Director of Planned Giving – $112,509.00
Carrie Munk – Chief Communications and Marketing Officer – $142,875.00
Patrick Wildman – Director of Public Policy – $112,358.00
Kathi Kromer – Director of State Advocacy – $110,661.00

Jesus christ....

Those are high and with more than I thought involved with big wages, but do remember that most charities like these aren't based soley around research. They do pay out large amounts of money to national centres which support people who have ALS. Up till now it's more like 7% of money that goes to research and around $5mil on wages, with a further $30mil going to the 50 odd national centres around the country. It's less clear exactly what the centres do, offer support groups and things which is important, both for people with ALS and those who look after family members with ALS.

The 7% of money going to research is somewhat of a red herring "oh look they're awful" because helping out people with the condition is a very important thing. I've said before that research is, it's not unlimited. You need scientists who actually want to research in the area and you need said scientists to actually have an idea what they want to research. There is only so much research you can fund because there is basically a handful of groups of people with any clue where to start looking and most of the research (in most diseases) won't actually lead anywhere. Supporting those who have ALS is incredibly important.

I'd like to see a more full list of wages, because it would be easy enough for each national centre to also be hiring overpaid people. I also don't think those numbers can be directly compared to what you think UK pay is like, IE those numbers are less high in the USA than they would be here.

However, they have plenty for this year and as this fad goes on and the general "i donate to what is most vocal" people all donate to one charity that can't even spend that money in one year other charities are getting less this year and have just as many people to support.

At this point stop donating to ALS, they've got more than enough to operate for a long time, other charities need your help more.

These people might be paid a lot for good reason. We don't know.

It's easy to just see a high figure and get out the pitchforks.

Absurd salaries.

I did wonder about the waste of water today whilst day dreaming, seems I was correct.

The salaries above are also based on a percentage of the donations and income generated from investments.

In short they will all get a huge pay rise from people's donations.

You wouldn't be saying that if you were racking it in.

I sense petitions as well as outrage coming from social media soon and screaming about it being immorally wrong.

I'd feel embarrassed tbh, no one needs $110,000 per year, but hey ho that's capitalism and all that isn't it.

UK residents shouldn't be donating to an American charity anyway.

Donate to the MNDA: http://www.mndassociation.org/

75p of every pound goes into "care, research, awareness and campaigning work"

Granted, that will include the salaries of all staff working on campaigns and marketing but meh.

They will also be able to claim Gift Aid which will see an extra 20% (I think) so every £1 you donate actually becomes £1.20.

I'd say that's entirely up to them.

MNDA is a great charity.

The issue with this is that you're supposed to have paid enough income tax to cover it, which if you're a student you might not have.

ALS or whoever they are have raked in $$$$££££ so it would be much more worth while donating to a charity that actually helps people where it's needed. Macmillan, Marie curie, hospice charities etc.

I have always prefered to donate to charities that actually help people in the real world rather than these big corporate capitalists charities that waste so much money.
