IcyBox IB-361-BL and SATA interface not working

I have a SATA-II drive and this enclosure and when I try and connect it to the mobo (an ABIT KV7) over SATA cable it wont work. If I connect the drive directly it works but not in the enclosure. The controller is only SATA-1 capable so I had to put the limiter on to get it to work directly but doesnt work in the enclosure anyway.

Any suggestions?

TBH I'd say replace that ICY BOX with something better, nice idea and nice looks but thats it, I've tried 2 different ones so far, one for NAS (read/write errors on the disc and then the network hardware died completely) and another for portable USB2 storage (very slow, killed the hdd in it)... got one on the way back from RMA atm but I don't think I'll bother with it...

a google search for icy box and problem or similiar terms isn't inspiring either.

My Icybox killed a HDD, and then the second HDD gave me loads of "Page File" and similar errors in XP.

I bought an £15 PCI-E SATA card and attached the same drive that was getting Page File errors, and what do you know... it works perfectly fine.

I'd steer well clear of them. My Icybox went out in the trash around a month ago.

I bought an icy box 138 II series last week, goes in the 5.25" case slot, didn't work at all, drive was ok, have received a replacement but I've decided just to send it back unopened.

Oh and don't update the firmware whatever you do - unless you can find several posts verifying they work after an update... been reading online an seems quite a few fairly knowledgeable people have tried this to get them working without errors and never got the device to work at all again after flashing...

Huugs:

I have exactly the same one as you, am using a Maxtor 120GB PATA HDD in it, via USB2, and it works very well, over USB2 I get an Average read in HDTach of 31MB/s, which is very good.

The only thing I can think of is, inside the Icy Box, there are 2 SATA connections, 1 for USB interface, and 1 for SATA interface, if 1 connection does not work try the other. :)

Oh, that's a bit interesting. So if I want to connect one of these to my PC over SATA I have to install the disk in one way and then if I want to connect it to my laptop by USB I have to take the caddy apart and change the connections?

I've just bought one... Here's hoping mine works :) Although I haven't got a HD to put in it yet, I'll get one pronto then.

Didn't realise about having to choose the connection internally either, can someone verify this? It doesn't bother me greatly, it'll be 99% used with my computer, I'll have to change it over if it's needed elsewhere on USB.

Just got my ICY BOX back from RMA, very fast turn around by overclockers, new box seems much better, connecting to it is instant (previously would take 10-20seconds) and so far I've not seen any stalls when writing/reading files, also file transfer rates are a constant 36-40Mbit, not stunning but acceptable compared to the 0-22Mbit fluctuations of the device this replaced...

I got mine working over Sata now thanks to jbloggs. I can now use it either way but need to swap which connector the drive is on inside. Its a shame that you cant just easily swap between interfaces but i dont think im gonna be swapping them that often.

On another point how hot-swappable are SATA drives? Should they come up with 'delayed write failed' messages like when you unplug a usb drive without doing the remove hardware thing in windows or can you literally just unplug them?

Cheers

Should I have a safely remove hardware option for a sata drive?
I know you have to do it for USB drives but i cant find any option for a sata drive.

Cheers I guess I wont try and use the hot-swap option for the drives. Neither my old desktop with the sata controller that doesnt even support speed negotiation nor the newer controller in my other computer show the safely remove hardware option for my sata drives.

I was just noticing under Disk Drives, in Device Manager (on one of my motherboards, Asus P4C800), that by right click the HDD->properties->Policies, under Write caching and safe removal, there is an option, "optimize for quick removal" which can be ticked, allowing the HDD to be removed without using the Safe Removal icon. :)

I just twigged on that the HDD that this is able to be done on is the HDD in the Icy Box, which is attached via USB and not SATA, on checking the other 2 HDDs, this option was greyed out. :)
