Ideally what size monitor would you game on?

Biggest pile of **** I've seen posted in a while.60fps isn't slow refresh at all and you only really need 120hz monitor for 3d. How does 60fps feel slow for you? It's impossible

I wasn't aware that you were using my eyes. 60hz is slower than 75hz, end of story. Let me put into laymen terms for you.

60hz = 60 fps
75hz = 75 fps

Take a wild guess at what you think will be smoother? I know it's difficult but take a guess?! Could it be errmm the higher number of 75 frames?

and don't give me any crap about human eye not seeing above 6o fps blah blah, that is absolute tosh.

You don't need more than 60Hz and you only need 120Hz for 3D stuff for an equivalent 60Hz.

Please do explain how a refresh rate of 60Hz is "slow" and why it has any impact on your viewing? (other than locking FPS to 60 with VSYNC on)

You might not need more than 60hz, but I do. It is slow for me in comparison to 75hz. Why do you think I have a 23" LCD lying on the floor gathering dust? For the fun of it?

I play quake live and 60hz is pretty much unplayable for me compared to 75hz, there is a noticeable increase in smoothness and response time of the mouse in 75hz. Maybe I just have faster reaction times and better eyes than you?

Just like to say also that I just did a clean install of Win 7, gfx card drivers etc and something hasn't felt right since I installed it, the mouse just felt weird. Whaddaya know? It has been running at 60hz for the last 2 days and I noticed something was up. Just witched to 75hz and a HUGE difference in mouse smoothness is apparent instantly.

Have you even tried a 75hz LCD compared to 60hz? If you have and you noticed no difference then your senses are pretty poor.

I have a 3011 which is fantastic. I do like the look of the new 2412 but not sure if I could go back to a smaller res now.
I would like a higher refresh rate panel. maybe a second monitor that is 3d capable but its not really a big deal.

Reminds me of people saying the human eye couldn't notice a difference above 30fps, pile of tosh.

When I first got into PC gaming, I remember reading almost everwhere that you only needed 25 FPS for smooth FPS, and a few places claiming that you couldnt see a difference with anything higher :p

The difference for me is very easy to see when I'm rotating the camera in my RPGs. While an FPS of around 30 doesnt stutter horribly, you can notice a lot of blurring due to frame skipping compared to just 40 FPS which is only 10 higher, or at least I can.

Just about every game I play runs at 40-60 FPS on my setup with everything maxed out, and I wouldnt want any less.

Now, one thing that a lot of people overlook is that the reason why the 'human eye cant see more than 60 fps' is maybe because such comparisons were made on a 60 hz monitor. I surely cant tell any difference over 60 hz, but thats not because of my eyes, that would be because that is the limit of most monitors. 120 hz monitors havnt been around for very long, and have only recently become available in screen sizes of 24" and above, so I doubt that any of the information I read regarding 'Not being able to see the difference above 60 FPS' is in anyway accurate when I really dont think the comparisons were made on a 120 hz screen.

I need a full 180 degree wrap around dome thing, ideal for flight sim'ing or the odd racing game. Got to be decent resolution though. I tried a projector once but blown up too large I could count the pixels.

22" 60hz 1650x1050- im considering upgrading its by far the oldest part of my setup now.

ill got for a 23 or 24 with 19xx pixels

If you have 2 monitors running off the same gfx card with one monitor at 60hz and the other capable of 120hz; can you run them both at different ratings? or will the 120hz default to 60?

You could just alternate the refresh rate on an old crt monitor and a fast paced fps would feel very different.

nope you can run them both at different settings.

I used to play quake on a 21 " crt that was good. Upgraded to 24" crt that was better. Gaming on the 27" imac is even better. Although the other day was playing gtr and toca 3 hooked up to a 50" plasma and that was great as well. Fired up quake live and that was not right on the 50". So depends what kind of game it is really

I assume you have com_max_fps at 125? 125/75 displays a much smoother image than 125/60:

at 60hz, it will display 0.48 of your framerate - 1 in 2, and 5 frames get dropped.
at 75hz, it will display 0.60 of your framerate - 1 in 2 with 12.5 additional.

It's a 25% frequency increase which means that in a game locked to 125 like Q3 often is, you're syncing frames much more often than you are at 60hz, meaning it's smoother. If Q3 was locked at 120 fps, then the 60hz would feel smoother.

*this is just guesswork, don't tear me apart if I'm wrong :p

And I kind of forgot that waaay back then, people used CRT monitors, not LCDs whoops :p

I remember I had an IIyama 17" diamondtron monitor that was advertised for 1600x1200 res @ 75 hz, but when using it I could only set that resolution to 60 hz. I was rather annoyed, it even said on the box 1600x1200 @ 75 hz :mad:

did you install the monitors drivers ?
mine required its drivers to be installed to see the full list of what it was capable of.
