Ideas for a Job.

As well as all these bonuses and crap. Come to think of it, it's not much at all really but still, I wouldn't mind.

Yeah a friend of mine got £100 bonus for good attendance ,he goes sick every 2 or 3 weeks
He brought himself a wii with some of his free cash ,imo it should be used to pay his bus and lunch money !

Sounds like a good idea. :) Gonna give it 2 weeks just to see what comes of other applications I've made recently. But watch this space.
Why wait 2 weeks? That's 2 weeks that you've wasted. Even if you do get an interview for something you've already applied for, that doesn't stop you from doing other things during the rest of your time - and from the sound of it, you've got plenty of free time if you're not in education nor working.

When I was your age, I used to work in a chip shop to fund college, and during the holidays I'd work days in a supermarket. It wasn't easy but it taught me to value the education I was getting. I also knew plenty of people who worked more hours than I did.

If you're a student in FTE, then your parents will receive a discount on their council tax and will continue to receive child benefit. Both of these disappear once you're no longer in FTE, so would need to be factored into the "can't afford college" excuses.

If you've really decided that you don't want to return to college, then be honest about how hard you've been looking for a job. Coming up with excuses about a supermarket being in a Polish neighbourhood sounds pathetic. If that's your attitude, then I think I know why you haven't found a job yet.

If you are serious about finding a job - any job - then get advice about rewriting your CV and ask for help filling in the application forms, answering interview questions. If you've had 30-40 rejections for nondescript jobs then you're doing something wrong. Even if you have no qualifications, there are positions advertised at your job centre that you'd be eligible to apply for... they'll pay badly (hence why they recruit at the job centre) but you're not in a position to be choosy from the sound of it.

Starting your own business is a nice pipe dream... keep it in mind for when you're day dreaming about owning a large house and a fast car, but from what you are saying, money is tight and you need to find something ASAP. In which case, don't hold out for something that quite possibly simply ain't gonna happen. Instead, get suited and booted, head into the centre of Reading and start going into every shop you see, asking them what positions they've got available. Someone said to not work at McDonald's but I'd disagree... you can't afford to be picky, so if they offer you something, take it.

Failing that, there's always the French Foreign Legion.

EMA easily covers your expenses for college (thats what its designed to do) even though I dont get it

I see you mentioned picking from a warehouse and used OcUK as an example, have you even considered somewhere like Argos, I was an xmas temp there and it was an excellent job where you were always busy and I was gutted I had to leave.

But in my house, We cannot go on with only one income. My mum cannot support me through collage. She just cannot afford too.

I need to support myself, and I need to do it very soon.

If you cant afford college then work part time at the same time. As you dont have a job anyway I cant see what the problem is.

You could EASILY do 15hours work a week on top of college at a supermarket or the like
Say u get a fiver an hour (at least).

15x5= 75quid plus 30quid EMA is 105quid a week....more than enough. You would be on even more if you worked sundays that pay time + a half.

IT doesn't rely on qualifications and certificates, you should be able to get a first line role and work up from there I'd have thought. And Reading isn't exactly a place where IT jobs are rare :)

get job at supermarket

save up cash for a deposit somewhere (just enough to rent a room/flat)

get transfer to a different supermarket branch

continue to work for said supermarket till you can find a better job in said area

????

profit

Thought about going self employed?

When I finished sixth form I didn't know what to do, didn't want to go to uni, I got asked to help out in the neighbours garden whilst thinking about what to do. 9 years later and I am still doing the same thing. Have never asked for any work as word just spread.

I sometimes have to go to the local marina to do some work on a clients boat and the amount of work available there is quite surprising. Every time I'm there I'm constantly getting offers of work 2/3 times a day. If it interests you perhaps ask the owner of the marina if they need a hand with anything such as washing/polishing or doing hull prep work.

It's a good way to meet contacts as the owners of the boats are obviously minted and run businesses therefore you could get your foot in the door with a job in computers.

That is exactly what I was doing, working at Argos over xmas, doing 6 hours on saturday at £4.89 and 6 hours on Sunday earning time and a half. My wage packet each week was £72 which was easily enough to last me.

But then it all ended when I got finished after xmas

no offense but speaking to a sales rep who was, rather unsurprisingly, nice to you doesn't mean you're in any position to recommend them.

Do a course, try to get a job related to that course then recommend them by all means if it works out.

Tbh.. most of what I've heard about these sorts of mass marketing 'training companies' is that they promise the earth and deliver very little. The adverts where it is hinted that someone in a dead end job can do a short 'IT course' and then earn 35k a year are a complete joke tbh...

But in Reading (where im stuck without money to move away) There dosent seem to be anything like that around here.
....
And approching businesses directly to look for a job and have found nothing. Any other ideas of places to look?

You're still young - go back to college - honestly just do it!!!! even if it is just for a vocational course GNVQ/BTEC etc..- with no qualifications at all you're likely to only get **** jobs for the rest of your life - just spend those extra 2 years working hard now and it will improve the quality of life for you for the next 60 years

Alternatively - if you really really really can't go to college for whatever reason get an office junior role

There are loads of tech companies within Reading - I'd say just start applying for junior positions directly - spec applications etc.. maybe even just cold call them and ask if they are recruiting. Get the junior role and work hard to impress important people in development - stay on late every night etc.. offer to do extra work - take an interest in the projects they are involved with, ask questions etc.. you'll get noticed that way and chances are someone will give you a break as you'll build up a rep as the reliable switched on kid who's always helping people out. basically 2 years of working 12 hour+ days and they might elevate you to the position of someone who has just finished college.

Basically - I'll say it again - that route is much harder - you're still young - get back to college - it is a much easier way to get a decent job.

If the only other job you can get is stacking shelfs in tesco then just get back to college now else you'll regret it later on.

I don't want to turn this into a discussion about collage and stuff. But EMA is not enough.

EMA dosent even cover transport. Let alone rent which is what this house needs!

If your financial situation is really as you say, then you will get £30 a week, now lets do the math.

Bus fairs for transport - 40p each way = About 80p a day, £4 a week.
College meals - £3 multiplied by 5 days a week, £15.

This still leaves you with around £10-11 a week in pocket.

Im personally not recieving EMA, and I get by at college EASILY on around £20 a week, with transport and meals.

If college really isnt an option AT ALL, then look towards speaking to a careers advisor, who can guide you on sorting a decent CV. With what you posted about applying to all these jobs and hearing nothing, it sounds very much like your doing something wrong somewhere along the line..

Unfortuently, it dosent cost 80p a day to get to collage. Its £6. ANYWAY :) Not the issue at hand - I just do not want to do it!!

That is one expensive bus service, my local bus services (Go North East) are excellent, I pay £10 per week and get unlimited travel region wide on any buses.

I am sure something along the lines of this will be available in your area, surely bus prices cant vary that much.

Sounds to me like you have every excuse possible not to get off your arse.

Sorry :p

What grades did you get at GCSE? Maths & English mainly.

Do you like working outdoors, and can you get to school green in reading?

If so, give me your email and I will send you some details of a possible job. I don't work at the reading office, but they all have the same recruitment page.
