Ideas on where to live in London

Ever seen Spaced?

2 bedroom flat, 23 Meteor Street, Tufnell Park, London. £90/week. Yeah right!

But... more seriously, Tufnell Park / Finchely is good.

Not to troll but that would be a lovely 20 minute walk for me everyday if I had to get to Piccadilly Circus every morning across Green Park, yes though the price might be a bit out of your budget in Pimlico/Belgravia.

On a more helpful note, all my friends seem to be moving south of the river, Clapham seems very popular along with Wandsworth/Battersea. Have you thought about living on a good bus route rather than the tube, going south from Piccadilly you have the 19 to Battersea, 88 to Clapham Common, 14 to Putney and the 9 to Hammersmith.

Well I've just been talking to the friend that I might be moving in with who has been looking for a while and he mentioned clapham, borough, oval or maybe elephant and castle (what a stupid name!) as he wants to live south due to where he is working.

Are any of those places affordable with the above budget?

As for a bus route, it's bad enough that I'm having to sell my car to use the tube, but I couldn't bring myself to have to use the bus everyday, it would kill my soul!

Oval and Clapham are definitely affordable. I don't really like Elephant and Castle, and Borough (at least around the market and Guy's Hospital) is out of your price range. The Oval actually has really good links to central london.

Ok, from what people have said on here, what I have heard from other people, and where I was thinking of going/where my friend was thinking, the overall concensus would seem to be

- Finchly if we want to go north

- Clapham if we want to go south

Agree/disagree?

Barnet > Finchley, but that might be just me being a snob :p plus we got a better football team, who could do with a little more support i might add, hint hint ;) £12 adults £6 children :D

Personally, I would not go for Clapham. It's overpriced, over-rated and miles from the City. travelling on the Northern line every morning to Piccadilly would be hell. Not a chance of a seat for a 20 (ish) min journey. Frequent breakdowns and cancellations. Pure misery. In summer, the northern line is hell on earth.

I would live in Islington. Near to the City, but around the same price as Clapham. Loads of good bars / restaurants. I am baised though as I used to live there.

Speaking from picadilly line experience. Osterley is nice. Ealing is nice

From South Ealing or Osterley you can get the pic. line to your work in maybe 40 mins.

Avoid: Hounslow, Acton,

Possibiles: Kensington, Knightsbridge, hammersmith

Clapham isn't bad at all. Good night life too. And you've got the northern line to get into london, or the train which goes to victoria. So it's not too remote. Oval has some nice areas but it's too near stockwell and loughborough junction for my liking.

Cost of living in Islington is soaring so not really ideal and the only decent area to stay around in Islington is South Islington (Angel / Kings Cross area) which could cost an arm and a leg to live in. Average rent price is around £1200 for the basic properties to £2000 for nicer ones.

Public transport is great in Islington and if you live near South Islington, it will be close to Picadilly Circus. There are plenty of new properties just built or being built behind Kings Cross so you might want to enquire on prices there.

For your rent target price, forget Kensington, Knighsbridge, Chelsea and Putney. Those are nice places but for £800 a month rent, I really doubt it :p

Obligatory Camden pimp! *points at location*

Then you'd be near me, and therefore more cooler! You could get a bus in every day as well which only takes about half an hour and isn't the tube...

I dislike Clapham, it's too young-professional yuppieville and all the bars are always stupidly rammed plus it's a pain to get to and from.

If you're working in Piccadilly itself it doesn't really matter about being on the Piccadilly line, Picadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square are all within 5 minutes walk so if you're near any tube station it'll be easy to get in.

For £700-800 a month you could get a really nice place, check on www.moveflat.com for an idea of what you can get.

Personally I think your be very limited to find somewhere in even Zone 4 for £800 2 bed flat. If thats your max budget you would be best looking in the dodgy parts of east london or miles out towards heathrow (like Osterley) which would be good as on the Picadilly line but take ages to travel in. I would also try avoid having to use the Northern Line as its by far the worse tube line in London. You could try places like Gants Hill/ Newbury Park which is on the central line & may be in your budget

You want to live anywhere from Oval tube up Kennington Road towards Lambeth North. All along that road is really nice. :)

Yup I agree with that. It only takes me 15 mins to get to the oval from mine, I drive past there a lot to go up to London.

That's going to be impossible though as the friend who I work with works jsut off one of the stations on the northern line, that's why it need to be near there really.

I found a studio flat for ~£750 a month in Notting Hill.
