Seems I have been sharing my bed with the following

whatthehell.jpg

Awoke to spot a bug on my sheets, after further investigation it would seem my bed inside around the fabric/wood frame has quite a lot of whatever the hell these things are. So pulled out some stuffing with one on it and took a photo. This one seems dead though as the top has sort of pulled apart when I poke it with a knife.

Anyone hazard a guess as to what it is? Size wise around 4mm long. Sort of looks like some bedbugs, which I really hope it isn't.

Not looking forward to going to bed tonight :(

Pretty sure that's a carpet beetle larva. They usually crop up in places that haven't been vacuumed in generations ;).

I think you might be right as the bug I saw looked like the carpet beetle after it err hatches I guess. And yes I hardly never vaccume inside the bed frame usually just do the mattress.

Tomorrow I shall be bed shopping.

CARPET BEETLE that is the larvae

Adult carpet beetles are about an eighth of an inch long, and round in appearance. The backs of the insects have much the same color scheme as the larvae. The larvae have small, hairy, soft bodies about a quarter inch long, depending on the instar. The larvae feed on a wide variety of foods, including carpets, furs, woolens, skins, stuffed
animals, leather, feathers, silk and many plant products.
The adults feed on nothing except pollen and nectar from flowers outside.

In spring and early summer, the adult will lay up to a hundred eggs
, usually cemented to the product, or on furs, woolens or any dried natural or animal material. The eggs hatch in about three weeks.

The larval stage can withstand a long period of no food, and can molt as many as 30 times. They also prefer clothes or fabrics soiled with perspiration, body oils and urine. As with Black Carpet beetles, the adults will pupate in the last larval skin and use the last skin to hide in for as long as a month.

CARPET BEETLE that is the larvae

Yup seems so, although from the bug I saw seems to be the "Varied carpet beetle". Sort of feel bad that I never though to hoover inside the bed frame, and how long have I've been living with them :(

Oh well... Tomorrow I am taking the carpet up, along with the bed and curtains then taken to the dump. Followed by a good dusting of Boric Acid which from reading seems to help kill them off. Just glad it wasn't bed bugs which seem worse to get rid of.
