maybe someone cut through one and this is the 'temporary' repair.

Most sewer explosions are caused by H2S rather than methane.

Whatever it is, it is probably defunct.

Could be something to do with the old rediffusion tv. I had a small junction box and cables on front of my house for rediffusion before I removed them.
