Identifying metal box in garden.

Woah, 3ph supply coming in and each phase being split off to each house. Looks well dodgy!

Is the inside of the box insulated? Could have seriously injured yourself or killed you if you had touched any of the live parts with the metal box!

It's similar in size and form to the covers they put over exposed electrical cables,
maybe someone cut through one and this is the 'temporary' repair.

Woot, I totally got this right

We've had much the same thing sitting on a roundabout in Stafford for the past six years, but plastic.

I can't believe you called the power company, that was free electricity :(

Yeah the box was insulated, good job as had been kicking the **** out of it trying to loosen it before i found the bolt :D

That's pretty crazy. Did they 'know' of it's existence on your property or was he surprised to see it?

Did he say why it was there in your garden in the first place and how long it had been there?

When the supply burst under our street they worked through the need to fix it rather than a crude temp fix then having to come back again to fix properly.

You found a load of free electricity, and then you rang the electric company to tell them?

Did living in plymouth teach you nothing!

Somehow, I don't think it'd be a simple matter of attaching an extension lead and running it into his living room. :D

Western Power have been out and it's live! it's a mains feed tower for the 9 houses behind us. each of the black cables is a 240V supply and each of the red cables is someones house supply. He'd never see a box like ours either, apparently they've normally got a lockable door on them. He was shocked it was still live and considered it very dangerous, He was contemplating getting the workmen out tonight to dig it up and replace it but eventually decided to get them out tomorrow.

Blimey!

So is it going to be replaced with another live box ? Does it have to be on your property?

I see no reason why not!

Attach another cable to one of those black ones (dodging the sparks), run it into a fuse box and jobs a goodun!

Probably.

I imagine if I were an electrician, thats exactly the sort of job I'd leave in someones back garden on a sunny friday afternoon.

Those red house supply cables look thin. My leccy supply pipe into my property is as phat as one of the black ones.

Wise move to call them as if that surged pop! Defo gotta get something out of them for it. A 3PH line be handy, have a proper mans cave then!

The Bit coin idea is amazing!!! Out doors so cool running as well!

Keep us posted

Does that being nearby mean you'd be able to get a 3phase supply installed pretty cheaply? Will be useful for charging your electric car in the future.

Same. Feed coming out of the ground to my house is pretty big.

What can you power off a 3PH power supply that you couldn't off a normal 1PH house supply?

The cable coming into my house has 230v on it although it is probably 50+ years old.

Other than that I'd be tempted to wire up an extension cable to the house and run a load of electric heaters for heating over the winter for free, if I thought I wouldn't get electrocuted.

I think you're lucky you didn't get electrocuted there. I'm really surprised there were no markings on the box itself.
