idiot american missionary killed by natives

Anyone know what came of this?

It's interesting learning about lost tribe BS. I watched a documentary recently about a 'civilised' mega-land owning aborigine who somehow laid claim to a large stretch of Australia, and our governments tried to buy the land off him for billions because it was rich in the newly discovered uranium. He said no, citing his religion and that anyone who screws around digging up the land will awaken 'the dragon'.

As for these Sentinel islanders, I have little sympathy. If they're allowed to murder with impunity, get off on it, have an orgy about it, and get internationally praised for it, then what sympathy do they need from me?

If we think they're unique, they're not. They certainly look like everyone indigenous to Africa, so they're hardly an endangered species of humanity.

What it boils down to is they're beneath notice 99.9999% of the time, which is a fine arrangement. Probably planet earth enjoys a similar arrangement when it comes to aliens.

Didn't hear of any updates to this. So I'm guessing the authorities are going to simply let this be.

As for sympathy for the Islanders, each to their own.

But what you call Murder here, is also 100% self defence. If Aliens came to Earth, and they carried a deadly disease with them (or in this case, the last time they were majorly contacted by "foreigners" or "aliens", a whole lot of them died from exposure to some common disease for the then modern man), I sure as heck will "Murder" them on the spot in defence of myself and the rest of the population after warning them to get away from us and they refused and kept approaching us.

If on the other hand the Aliens have a viral but non life threatening or delibitating disease, then by all means, if I Murder them, jail me, shoot me, nuke me, I'll deserve that. But in defence of your own life and others in your world? Not as clear cut.

You think the islanders know intruders have diseases they can't deal with and that's why they kill them?

I think they know enough that intruders only bring calamity and misfortune. We know it to be disease. They don't need to know "what" it is specifically. Only intruders bring it with them and they (the Islanders) suffer. So, kill it. Especially since they gave the intruder in this case ample warning and time to get away by all accounts.

IIRC they have had some nasty experiences with "outsiders" going back a couple of hundred years ("explorers" kidnapping members of the tribe), which is close enough for the stories to be quite well remembered and passed down by word of mouth.

Where was this from out of interest?

The more recent contact was a few decades ago IIRC where gifts were exchanged, prior to that there were numerous other attempts to make contact by leaving gifts etc..

British sailors (yay :( ) kidnapped some, killing some of them with disease and then apparently experimented on the kids. They then returned them to the island allowing them to tell the rest of the islanders how much more advanced and enlightened we were.

So let me understand this correctly, you are all saying there is an Island with a lost tribe on it where none of them wear either a Man Utd or Liverpool shirt?

Your user name is slightly ironic.

This is interesting and made way before this latest incident so free of guff.

Where was this from out of interest?

A couple of hundred years ago 6 of the islanders (2 elderly people and 4 children) went to the larger nearby islands on a British ship. It's not known for sure what the circumstances were for the journey, so it might have been kidnapping. Or it might not.

The 2 elderly people died on the other islands. The reason is unknown. This was a couple of hundred years ago, so cause of death was often unknown. With modern knowledge, disease seems the most likely reason. The 4 children were then returned home to North Sentinel Island.

The most recent deliberate contact before this reckless arrogant fool went there was in 1995. The Indian government made a number of attempts over the years, eventually stopping because they were concerned about accidentally killing the islanders with diseases Indians are resistant to but the islanders have no resistance to, which is a very valid concern. Apparently coconuts were the best received gift. The Indian government also did a flyby after the really bad tsunami a few years back, to see how the islanders were faring. They shot at the helicopter, so clearly they were still alive and managing by themselves.

What struck me as odd when I read up on it a bit recently is that it's not a remote island. It's right next door to other, bigger and populated islands. A good swimmer could swim the distance without any trouble. It's on a par with the English Channel, but probably an easier swim because the water isn't as cold.
