idiot american missionary killed by natives

I find the idea that there’s still ancient tribes on this planet that have had little contact with the advanced world very interesting
Personally I find it kind of strange that it's allowed.

I mean, I can sort of "get" the not wanting to interfere, "prime directive" type ****, etc. But at the end of the day these are human beings we're talking about not zoo exhibits, they would never choose to live as backwards savages if they had the option (unless they're insane) and its not like they lack intelligence due to still being neanderthals or any crap like that. I just find it puzzling that we take children away from unfit parents yet we allow an entire group of people to live like it's 6000 BC just because it makes us feel superior.

Really? You honestly think that's why?
Can you think of another reason?

Forcing a bunch of people to live as savages makes us feel/look better, it's like a zoo exhibit. It's sad that people are made to live like that in the 21st century (hell it was sad in the 20th century), if you took a couple hundred people and dumped them on an island then forced them to live without technology/healthcare/education there would be outcry, yet we force these people to live like it's 6000 BC just because they never "got smarts" when the rest o mankind did. These are people, humans, they deserve basic human dignity/respect.

Right to self determination, bro. They don't want outside help. There's nothing dignified in forcing them to shape up in our image - that sort of colonial attitude is a bit out of fashion nowadays.

They're living how humans have lived for thousands of years. The right way of doing it, really. We should be so lucky.

I believe the idea that everyone should be uplifted to be a valid argument if you're a humanitarian, the fact is that these places are going to be destroyed by ever increasing human involvement in the ecosystem, we don't need to touch the island to annihilate it nowadays.

Rising waters and mega-typhoons will probably kill these people off well before a disease does. Same in South America, the rainforest destruction and logger wars will kill off all the tribes there as well.

Your mistake is calling them savages. With that attitude you will never understand.

Yeah, that's not how it works.

I.E many Amish people choose to live without advanced technology and pretend it's still the 1800s, they make that choice when they become adults however many of them decide instead to embrace the world instead and live a normal life.

A bunch of people being kept on an island isolated from knowledge/technology/evolution is not self determination, it's an ant farm. If they had a basic understanding of the world and basic education most of them would choose to leave, keeping them there just out of a feeling of superiority is cruel.

Wrong, it's a correct assessment. You just don't like it because of the historical connotations. It's that bias that's preventing you from understanding.

To be fair, they act savagely to outsiders.

Our attempts at contact over the centuries have ended in aggression and they have made it clear they wish to be left alone.

The Indian government has made it illegal to come within 3 miles of the island to protect outsiders as well as the Islanders. Islanders are at risk from poachers who are there to hunt for rare animals as well as virus' and diseases. Due to their isolation they have little to no immunity to many contagious diseases that we face on a daily basis. There are few enough of them that accidentally spreading the flu on first contact could wipe out these people.

These people are unique in how isolated they are. Other indigenous tribes and peoples in the past often traveled, met and traded with outside communities and were not so isolated or localized.

There isn't exactly much we can do without risking them getting infected.

If they were forcibly exposed to the modern world they would cease to exist as a people and their language and customs would die in a few generations. They live as the majority of humanity has done through our history and if they chose to embrace the modern World we should accept them if they chose not to as seems the case we should leave them be.

That was tried with Aborigines in Australia and it was resented a lot, the idea was that they'd raise the kids with regular Australian families and in one generation the Aborigines could integrate.

I do see what you're saying though re: them essentially being left there and the comparison with leaving kids with unfit parents has some relevance. Theses are other human beings not some curious situation that must be maintained, there could well be people among the tribe who are murdered, women who are raped etc..etc..

I do think there is some merit to the idea that contact should still be sought to be established with these tribes over time but it looks like it would be rather difficult in this case.

Such a typical SJW attitude, get triggered over someone's choice of language and then ignore what they're actually saying.

your arguments are about as stupid as it's possible to be. no one is even remotely keeping these people as ants or forcing them to do anything, if you'd bothered to read even a single sentence on the whole affair you'd see they are the ones forcing people away and shunning all contact.
if you feel so badly for their conditions, please go over and try and liberate them. see how well that ends.

Indeed.

The thing I find most depressing about it, is that the decision to keep these people frozen in time and prevent them from progressing or integrating into humanity is being made by the Indian government. But I guarantee 100% that if a member of that government had his god appear to him and offer to alter history so that civilization/colonization never came to India and turn him into an uneducated savage running around in a loincloth then he would decline the offer because knowing how much better he has it any sane person would, the hypocrite.

Who is keeping them frozen and stopping them from progressing?

They have been cautious of outside contact since having the majority of their population killed by the British so you can understand why they no longer wish to have any contact with outsiders. Forcing integration is against their wishes.

I think you're confusing them with the other Islanders/tribes in the area no? This group has no communication outside their Island.

good for the natives, their land their rules. GTFO or get smashed, the american chose wrong and paid the ultimate price.
